Hi all,
Could anyone with access please look up the Census records for 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 for William Stephens John FULTON (born c1832), wife Eliza, son Archibald Robert (born Edinburgh 1874).
There may be other children to this couple (that's what I am hoping to confirm). They may not be in Edinburgh in 1871, William was in the army and is subsequently listed as an army pensioner.
By his death in 1918 William was widowed and living on Morningside Road (Baker and confectioner - retired), Archibald was also living in Morningside, but Falcon Road.
Thank you in advance, I am doing this research for a friend and have already exhaused my SP credits!
Kirsty

Hi,
In the 1861 census at 54 Regent St, St James parish of Westminster, Middlesex. He was a 30 year old County Office Messenger, born Devonport, Devon and his wife Eliza 22, born in Limehouse? or similar. They had first child, Elizabeth as a 1 year old born, in St James West, Middlesex.

Hi,
In the 1841 census young Eliza 3 yo, is staying with parents William and Eliza in Salmo Lane, Limehouse andher younger brother, William 1. Her father is a Tailor. I suppose an easy transition to undertaker then, measure them up quite quickly.

Hi KirstyG,
Not sure if the following is opening a can of worms, but on IGI on 7th Oct 1832, William Stephens John Fulton was born to parents Thomas and Elizabeth Fulton in Saint John And St Mary, Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales. It would be some coincidence if this is not your man, see the combination of middle names and date.
Do you have death certificate, this would prove if correct parents or not.

Thank you for all of that!! I had some of the children, but not James or Mary, and I didn't have the marriage or any information about Eliza. I was interested to see that he was wounded at Balaclava as he was one of the survivors of the Charge of the Light Brigade (being a private in the 8th Hussars). Amazingly his uniform jacket from 1854 was recently sold online.
Tom: I had seen that IGI birth entry for Cardiff, and had presumed it to be correct given the exact middle names.
I do have the death certificate, and it gives his parents as Thomas Fulton (army pensioner/ weaver of silk and wool) and Isabella Fulton, MS Atkins. Registered by his son Archibald.
As Elizabeth and Isabella can be interchangable I took it to be correct. Also one of William's daughters was named Isabella (christened 29 AUG 1869 Brixton, Surrey, England) I just realised that their first born daughter was called Elizabeth, but she may have died as she is not mentioned in any later census records
I shall have to ask the person for whom I am doing this research (a friend of the family) if they have any more details that might tell us if the welsh birthplace is correct, I know they had gathered some information about him in terms of newspaper articles, his medals etc. Meanwhile i shall keep digging...
I am sure they will be overjoyed at what I have managed to turn up in the last 48 hours with the help of some wonderfully helpful rootschatters!
Thanks again Kirsty

Hi KirstyG,
I am concerned we have 2 different people. The number of census entries that say he was born in England and Devon, in particular. Why did he move to Scotland after being wounded at the Crimean? He did not have any Scottish connections. The Welsh birth is just confusing. Look forward to more details so we can narrow it down to 1 person.
