would someone kindly look at 1840 and 1850 census for Thomas Chestle in Illinois. He was born in England abt 1813. He supposedly came to America as a child, by himself by jumping aboard ship. He first got married to Samanath Thanahill 17 Feb 1841 in Morgan County Ill. The name may be spelt as Chessell also.

I have found a Thomas Chestle in later census with a wife Angelina. Would that be your guy, remarried. If it is, he had a whole new family with the second wife.

Thanks for both replies. I had him in the 1880 census and found his first marriage. I was wondering if it stated how long he had lived in the U.S. and with Angelina how long he has been married to her. For some reason I have the death of his first wife and the marriage to Angelina the same date and wish to correct that.

I guess you would want to clear that up. That would get tongues wagging.
I looked on the 1900, because I think that is the first census that includes info about how long married, but I can't find her on that one. I am assuming she had passed away by then. I don't know when Illinois started keeping marriage records. I looked online, but you need to order them from the county, and they don't have a website. You would need to contact Cass County directly to ask them, if that is where they got married. Interestingly, Angelina was born in Virginia, and the county seat is Virginia, IL.
Anyone have any ideas as to the next step? Maybe find a likely church in the town they lived in?

Thank you for trying. They were both deceased by then. I would assume that Thomas got married soon after since he had small children. I do have the children from both marriages. I will do some more researching and try to solve the puzzle.

Another option, but it could be a lot of work, is to try to trace the family forward and find a living relative. They might have some info.
It looks like it was a small town in Illinois that they lived in, so I would maybe try to find a church with records also. You can narrow down the second marriage date by the birth of Angelina and Thomas's first child and work from there.
Good luck, and if there is anything else, let us know.

Hi If you go to this website http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/marrsrch.html
and search for CHESTTE, Thomas, it indicates a marriage to Angelina MILNER in 1858 in Cass County.
Looks like a good possibility. Grub
