DURRANT'S IN MAYFIELD
« on: Friday 09 April 04 00:54 BST (UK) »

Cheesy Sure hope I'm doing this right, first time is a bit scary isn't it?
Greetings from New Zealand, 130 years ago my Great great grandfather emigrated to NZ to start a new life, and here I am trying to go back and find his 'old' life, a bit ironic really.
I am researching the family of Thomas Parker Durrant, b.1794 in Heathfield and his wife Elizabeth Cornwell/Cornwall b.1792 Mayfield, and am trying to associate Thomas with other Durrant's born in the same area. Chris, does your 1831 Census of Uckfield encompass Mayfield? I would be so grateful if you could have a look for the Durrant name in it.

Hi there Kiwigirl

Yes, you got it right - well done

Unfortunately the 1831 Uckfield census does not cover Mayfield - Sorry
plus there are no Durrant names in it anyway.

The Durrant surname appears at least 13 times on memorials in Lewes churchyards between 1751 and 1852 (but not after that) Most of them were aged between 59 and 83 - a damn good age for the time as most of the population never expected to live past 40 years) - are you looking for anyone in particular?

Hi Chris, thanks for the fast response. I have hit something of a brickwall with my Durrant's. Thomas Parker Durrant was baptised in 1793 Heathfield, his parents Thomas Durrant and Sarah.
A reasonable gap until 1801 when Edward Parker Durrant was baptised,in Heathfield to parents Thomas 'Durrant or Parker' and Sarah, followed in 1809 by the baptism of Sarah "Durrant or Parker", parents Thomas 'Parker or Durrant" and Sarah. Now I am fairly certain that these children are all siblings, they all passed the "Parker" name onto their children as middle names.  But I can find nothing on their father as either Thomas Durrant or Thomas Parker. If Thomas snr. was 'base born' one would think he would have made his choice of surnames by the time he was naming his own offspring, or could Parker be an alias? Also can find no record of a marriage between him and Sarah under either names. Any suggestions? Roll Eyes

Have you seen this site www.theSussexWeald.org - there are 174 Durrant surnames on the site.
The site realy only covers East Sussex Villages, Mayfield is included, it has lots of background information as well as Parish records, 1851 census etc.  Well worth a look.

Hi kiwigirl

The site that ‘suey’ mentioned www.ThesussexWeald.org does indeed include lots of Durrants, and your Thomas Parker Durrant is there taken from the 1851 census – they got him born in 1794.
There are also several family trees concerning the Durrants from Mayfield, etc.
Lots of Durants, but they all seem to be taken from 1851 / 1881 census – does not distinguish between Durrant as a maiden name or married name.
Well worth a look though.

To access the information – on the home page of ‘The Sussex Weald’ you will find in the top right hand corner the word ‘genealogy’; click on it and the select ‘D’ from the list on the right, (A – Z of Surnames) you then require page 2 of the ‘D’ to get you Durrants.

Found the Sussex Weald site about a month ago, actually I'm surprised it's still going, was a bit worried I would wear it out have visited so many times! Great site isn't it.

Have just found Thomas Parker Durrant's death recorded in 1851 on the Free BMD site so will now send for certificate with fingers crossed and bated breath, and see what info that supplies.

Have just realised that Goudhurst in Kent isn't that far from Mayfield, my SPICE line comes from there, so maybe these guys knew each other, who knows. Then again the Spice lot were transported down under, a family of reputed thieves! So maybe not.

Thanks again for the advice.

Hi Kiwigal

I've recently started using the rootschat site and, like you, are from New Zealand looking for info about the Durrants in Mayfield, Sussex. The fact that you seem to be researching exactly the same family seemed quite incredible, as far as my family knew only one Durrant left Sussex in the 1870s and that was Robert Rowland Durrant, my great-great grandfather.
I'm 95 percent sure that his grandfather was Thomas Parker Durrant snr (born 1793 - the one you were tracing).  And that Robert's father was also Thomas Parker - this was the one that died in 1851.
Anyway, I'm won't waffle on too much at the moment - I'm just hoping that you pick this message up and that we can compare notes.

Hi,
My husband is descended from Sarah Parker Durrant born 1810 Heathfield. She married Joseph Ticehurst in 1829 in Brighton Sussex. I have come to a standstill regarding her parents Thomas Parker Durrant and Sarah . I know she had two siblings Edward and Thomas .

Would love to hear from anyone and would be glad to help with  research if I can

Hi Claire

I'm just getting back into researching Sarah Parker Durrant's brother, Thomas Cornwell Parker, born 1814. So far I don't have too much info, and would appreciate any help whatsoever.

Thomas Cornwell Parker and Sarah's parents were Thomas Parker Durrant, born 1794 (baptised in Heathfield) died 1851, and Elizabeth Cornwell, b. 1792.
I haven't been able to go back further than this. There has always been a story in my family that the Durrants left France for England prior to the French revolution, but as yet I have not been able to verify this. Though it could be why things seem to hit a brick wall before this time.

Thomas Cornwell Parker's son Robert Rowland immigrated to New Zealand some time in the 1850s - he was my great-great grandfather.

Regards, Lisa
