Coroner report 1885 Derby
« on: Wednesday 02 July 08 17:44 BST (UK) »

Would I be able to obtain a copy of a coroner report in Derby 1885? Who do I need to contact?

Is it likely to give precise information regarding the death of Maria Cockerton.
Am I likely also to find information about her family and circumstances leading to her death.

I do have a short newspaper article on her death but would like to know more generally.
Her death was 8th March 1885 at 65 Warner St, Derby. Death caused by fractured skull due to falling downstairs.

thank you Teresa

Hi Teresa,

Is the report you have re SARAH Cockerton wife of Inspector Cockerton?  There
is a report in the Derby Mercury 11th March 1885, is this the one you have?

A report Derby Mercury 2nd December, 1885 reporting a riot at Elections in Nottingham,
Inspector Cockerton sustained severe head injuries. (Derbyshire Police had been sent to Nottingham to assist) a later report states he was still off work, the injuries had been caused by his own men who had not recognised him as he wore a low cap.

A further report in the issue of 29th Jan 1891,
Retirement of Inspector Cockerton, an old Marine Non Commissioned Officer from the
position of Drill Instructor to the Derbyshire County Force.

Hope this is of interest.

Thank you Spendlove,

I do already have the above newspaper articles thanks to the excellent Gale newspaper site. Thank for your interest. I think a letter to the Derbyshire Record Office at Matlock  to seek out official coroner records may be the best action.
Best Wishes Teresa

Derbyshire record office will have such a report, Inquest reports contain an enormous amount of information, including details of Witnesses, they are worth following up
