Alan,
The downside to that is Newcastle RO has just increased it's fees and increased it's turnround time... charging extra for "family history" certificates.
Sleep well !

Alan,
While you were in your kip, I was in stuffy research room ( Tyne & Wear Archives) loking a film of the original record of the marriage ceremony
27 Sept 1873 Christchurch, Shieldfield, Newcastle
The vicar clearly wrote "Fitter" for William's occ. He put good dot above the latter "i". He also wrote "Fitter" for his dad's occ, but this time he made no dot and the latter "i" was thicker, beginning to look like a latter "e"
William and Hannah made sigbatures, his not as spidery as Hannah's.
So did the witnesses William Simm and Mary Ann Park.
Trivia Angle... In the year 1873, this newish church performed only 16 marriages .. none between March and Sept !
PS.
The Banns for William/Hannah were posted/published 7th, 14th and 21st of Sept. The Banns register is endorsed that the couple were " both of this parish" ------------------------------------------------------------------------
You will notice that both sets of family were based in area of the Parish of Longbenton, that the couple married in Newcastle, then had their children within LB parish area.
Their marriage was reg. in Newcastle RO. The birth of their son John was registered with Tynemouth Reg. District (which had jurisdiction over LB parish) sometime within the December Quarter (so that is anytime from 1st Oct to 31 Dec 1873. So it looks as though Hannah was already expecting John when she was married. Married they married "away" from home because of that reason ??

Some mysteries here - my father only knew of three siblings for his grandfather - but more are recorded in the attached excerpt. Hannah born before Sept 30th 1850 would be a very early sister to William born 1850 (don't have d.o.b. to hand). What happens in the case of adoption ?
John Wardle and Mary Temple have (so far !) Thomas born 1834/5, Elizabeth born 1840, Arthur Temple born 1844, William born 1850, Hannah born 1950 plus a Harry and a Pollie .......
Arthur Temple was still alive (died 1919) when the following was written so could have been consulted.
"THE METROPOLIS OF FOUR COUNTIES Newcastle and Gateshead
from “NORTHERN PRIMITIVE METHODISM” by W.M. PATTERSON, E. Dalton, London, 1909 - p307-332
To hear Arthur T. Wardle tell of his reminiscences of Westmoor is to be thrilled. Sixty years ago this society exercised a marvellous power, which continued for almost a generation. The people were alive, prayer meetings sometimes lasted all night, and miracles of grace and mercy followed. Bessie Simpson, Tommy Lowrison, John Johnson, George Orton, William Simpson, Tommy Hymers, Tommy Barnes, and the grandfather of G. B. Gleghorn, of Peterborough, were to the fore in those days. Then there were the Wardles. Harry, the eldest, died in 1853. Arthur, father of Professor W. L. Wardle, B.D., went into the ministry in 1867, and William followed him six years later. Both have served the Connexion well. Their younger sister Pollie began to preach when she was sixteen, was popular in the Northern circuits, and is now the wife of a Methodist minister in America. The Hendersons, Hartleys, Watkins, with Wardle, Charlton, and others still keep the altar fires burning at Westmoor."
There is a memoir of AT in the Methodist minutes (I think) for 1914 but not on line as far as I know. Here he is recorded as having been taken out of the mines at 14 to become a preacher ...
I have not yet started my own homework on the records so am (parasitically) relying on the post of others.
Ken
