1641/2 Westmorland Protestation Returns Lookup Please-Completed
« on: Thursday 03 July 08 07:58 UTC (UK) »

Hi Deborah,

Could you please see if there are any ELWOODs in the villages surounding Dufton, especially Long Marton & Brampton. I have lost a Lancelot Elwood & am trying to find him!!

Also could you please see if there are any TUER/TEWAR entries for Dufton.

Thanks in advance,

Gillian

PS are you interested in Ellwood entries from the Crosby Ravensworth PRs from 1812 -1816?

Gillian
Tuers etc in Dufton no date given but after 3 May 1641 (from 2 and a bit columns):
John Tuer senior (1st column, half way down)
John Tuer junior (2nd column, near end)
There are no other Tuers etc listed in surviving Westmorland protestation returns.

All the Elwoods are in Dufton apart from:
Bampton no date give (from 4 and a bit columns)
Roger Elwood (2nd column, half way down)

Barton 6 Mar 1641/2 (from 2 columns)
Thomas Elwood (near top of 2nd column)

And yes, (sorry) I would be interested in the CR Ellwoods for that period.  Thanks
regards
Deborah

The vicar usually wrote either the names of those refusing to sign or a statement that there were none known who refused to sign.

They also tended to include only men between the ages of 18 and 60.  How old was your Lancelot?

The surviving protestation returns are for East and West Ward only.  So I think that means he could have been living somewhere in Kendal or Londsdale Wards (or further afield) and not appear.

Re: 1641/2 Westmorland Protestation Returns Lookup Please - Savage and Dodd
« Reply #5 on: Wednesday 17 September 08 13:21 UTC (UK) »

Jill
Only East Ward and West Ward survive and most of your requested parishes don't appear to be in either?  There are no Troughtons nor Geldarts anywhere.  There are Dockers in Shap, Orton, Morland, Crosby Ravensworth

Clifton is in West Ward:
one and a bit columns of names
John Savidge marks (near top of 1st column)
William Savidge marks (middle of 1st column)
(missing) Savidge marks (near bottom of 1st column)

and there are no other Savages anywhere else.

There are no Dodds anywhere.  But there are Todds in Askham:
nearly 2 columns of names for 3 May 1641
James Todde (near bottom of 2nd column)

in Barton:
nearly 2 columns of names for 6 March 1641/2:
John Todd (second half of 1st column)

and some in Clifton and other places.

regards
Deborah

Thanks for that very quick reply, Deborah.

Pardon my ignorance, but am I right in thinking that if they 'marked' , then that meant they were of the Protestant faith?

I'm particularly interested in the Savidge entries in Clifton. At the moment, I've traced them back to a Thomas Savage's 1674 marriage - and from there, they're all Quakers. Thomas was not to be found in the Quaker records on that new Nonconformist BMD site so I'm wondering if these could be his family - not sure when the Society of Friends started. Will have to do a bit of googling!

Thanks again,

Jill

Those who refused to swear the oath are explicitly noted at the end of the returns for each parish.  In some cases, names of women known to be 'recusants' would be included as well.  That was the real purpose of the protestation returns - to identify the non-protestants.

Some returns are written in one hand.  Others seem to be a list of signatures (or marks where the person couldn't write).

Thanks.

I did my googling (!), and the Society of Friends seem to have started in this country about 1650-60, so fits in well with my Thomas Savage probably being the first generation of the family to be 'converted'.

That's been a big help - thanks again.
