I am trying to find out about the history of the Station Hotel in Eaglescliffe, Stockton-on-Tees. Could somebody please point me in the right direction to find this information - also is the building still there and being used as a hotel - if so is the name still the same? Thank you for your help in advance grossan

Hi Grossan
Do you already have the 1901 Census with people at this Hotel? If so, are there actual street address' for the families enumerated next to or near the Hotel?

Ambly - thank you for replying. Yes, I have the 1901 census and the entries before the Station Hotel are for"Rly.Refreshment Rooms" followed by three separate properties in Station Road - then the Station Hotel - I am anxious to find out about the history of the Hotel as the then proprietor was connected with a family I am helping to research - rumour has it that he may have built it as well as other properties in the area. grossan

Hi Grossan
Hopefully someone will jump in with "Local knowledge"!
Meantime - and you may already know all this: The Station Hotel is at or near the railway station in Eaglescliffe. The "Rly" as in Refreshment Rooms, is short for "Railway" The next 1901 Census enumerated road after the Station Hotel etc, is: Swinburne Road.........
............Here is a map, giving an indication of location: (mousehover the map and hold down to move the map up a bit to see the full area). http://www.houseprices.co.uk/map.php?pc=TS16+0AA&show=s
Station Road doesn't appear to have been very long?
There is a pub nowadays (and back to at least the 1970's) at 6a Station Road Eaglescliffe, called "The Sportsman" which is definitely in the right area (view location maps) here: http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubmap/61164/ http://www.pubinnguide.com/pubdetailsidx62718.asp
Maybe the present owner of The Sportsman, knows of it's history - whether or not it used to be known as the Station Hotel.
Here is is a view of Swinburne Road circa 1900.... http://picture.stockton.gov.uk/photos/S876.aspx

I know someone who lives in Egglescliffe, so I have sent him an e-mail, and hopefully tomorrow(Mon) he will see it as he doesn't have computer working at home at this moment in time.
Hopefully he will find something out for me. Let you know if he gets anything.

Hi This is what I got back
There is a Sportsman Hotel, Station Road, Eaglescliffe - which has been there for as long as I can remember. It is the only public house in what is a relatively short road, running down to the railway station.

Hi all
Oo-er! I though I'd have one last Google - found a photy of the Sportsman. It's up for lease! Guess you could always try contacting the seller, Grossan!

Architecturally, it definitely looks like that building has been around since at least 1901, anyway! Sash windows upstairs, and with the big front windows and the doorway style, looks like it could have been purposely built as a business premises.....your Welsh man there in 1901, was enumerated as a Builder and a Publican, wasn't he?
Cheers AMBLY

Jolly Roger, Roobarb and Ambly - my thanks to you all for the information you have given me - I think the Sportsman Hotel is the one I am looking for and I am indebted to you, Ambly, for finding the picture and as you say it looks very likely to be the place mentioned in the 1901 census. I believe Herbert Thomas Jones, the proprietor in 1901 built houses along what is now Yarm Road. Again my thanks to you all grossan
