I am trying to trace my great, great, great grandfather his name is Edward Mills and he married Ann SOUTHGATE on 20 OCT 1831 in Fincham, Norfolk. His wife died in 1840, and according to the 1841 census the children ended up in Downham Market workhouse. I do not know what happened or any information in relation to Edward. He was down on his son's (William Redish Southgate who changed his name back to Southgate!) marriage certificate as a wheelwright.

I don't know if anyone can help or suggest a place I could go to explore

Thank you for the welcome. William married in 1857 and changed his name from Mills to Southgate sometime between 1851 and then. He names his father on the marriage certificate but his father is not down as a witness and it does not mention him as deceased.

Unfortunately I do not have his age when he married Ann, or his date of birth which is why I think it is difficult to progress. I obtained the date of marriage (20Oct)from a family member who found it in the Fincham Parish Register, witnesses were John Mallows and Jane Southgate. Ann was christened 11 Aug 1808 and it appears probably had two illigitimate children before she married Edward and had William.

I am wondering whether it might be that if I go to the Fincham Parish register I could find some of this information out? I presumably have to go to the local register office?

Hi Karen,

It would be an idea to check with Norfolk Record Office to see if they have the Fincham Parish Register for that time.  Some registers are still held by the parish church.
