Searching for confirmation of marriage between Frederick Meinecke born Bavaria circa 1850 to Clara Lavinia Conder born 1846 St Pancras, London, England, daughter of Joseph Conder & Lavinia Clara Varley.
1870 census in USA which show children born to Frederick Meinecke in Maine: Gertrude circa 1860, Charlie circa 1863, Angelita circa 1865, Frederick circa 1867, Louisa b 1870 (New York). These children are found in census without parents. Think these children are from a first marriage & perhaps at relative's home.
1880 census show these children with Frederick (father) and Clara in New York, minus Gertrude but now including children from marriage to Clara, all born New York: Arthur P., born 1874, George A., born 1876, Otto J., born 1877, Mildred M., born 1880.
Frederick snr. is not found after 1880, most of the other children are.
Can anyone help me with birth, death or marriage records for these people. I have Lavinia Clara's parents in New York in 1870 census but not after & have only confirmed one of her siblings as in USA, Alfred J. Conder who appears with the Meinecke family on several occassions.
Pretty sure these people all belong with our Varley/Conder tree but just want to try to confirm it.
thanks Debra

Pretty certain this is Clara's death: Clara L. Meinecke (age 65) died 11 Jan.1912 Manhattan [born c1847 which fits with information in 1st post]
You can try looking for rest of family here: www.germangenealogygroup.com
Looked for Frederick but couldn't see anything certain without knowing his birthdate.

1900 census Clara (widowed) is living with son Arthur P. (head of household) and her 3 other children in the Bronx.
You can see 1900 census yourself by going to www.familysearch.org then clicking 'Sneek a Peek' box on right side of page, clicking on 1900 census then searching for Clara Meinecke.

I've found a bunch of ads in the Bangor Daily Whig & Courier newspaper for a store called F. Meinecke's at 56 Main Street, which sold lace, linens, and other fabric. They date from 1857 to at least 1867. There's also a resolution of a committee of clerks of Bangor in Jan. 1867 that said Capt. F. Meinecke was an unselfish merchant, an honest man, and a true gentleman.
In 24 Apr. 1918, there's an article in the Daily Kennebec Journal that says Frederick H. Meinecke of Bangor filed primary papers with the Department of State as a Republican candidate for county treasurer of Penobscot County.
In the Daily Kennebec Journal on 23 Sep. 1944, it stated that Charlotte D. Meinecke of Bangor received a Master's degree from the University of Maine.
In the 1917 New York City directories, there are the following entries:
Conder Alf. J (Conder's Book Store) 366, 5th Ave.
Meineke, Fred, clk h892 Trinity Ave.
Meineke, Otto J. slsman Underwood Typewriter Co. h 130 Wadsworth Ave
1925 New York City directory: Conder Alf. J (Conder's Book Store) 65, 5th Ave.

Just found lots more in Bangor Daily whig & Courier:
6 Nov.1868- "We are pleased to learn that Mr. F. Meinecke, who has been selling out his stock of fancy goods with a view of leaving the city, has determined to remain with us, and has again vigorously commenced business. His goods are new and fresh, and he will be pleased to meet his old friends."
9 Apr.1869- Business changed- ... purchased the business of F. Meinecke, 56 Main St.
25 June 1874- Musical Matinee- Gertie Meinecke
19 Aug.1886- "Capt. F. A. Meinecke well known to many of our citizens died in Brooklyn, N.Y., Monday, at the age of fifty-six years. ...1856-1868 Bangor... [Civil] war- Captain Second Maine Regiment... reverses in his enterprises... and more!
There are lots of items about the family in Bangor paper- far too many to post- but if you are interested Debra let me kno and I'm give instructions about looking them up yourself.

Hi aghadowey
WOW!! This is great. It fits with what I've found in the census so far, [still working on those], Frederick is listed as Commercial Merchant and Alfred J. Conder was a book shop owner, Otto & his brother George both worked for Underwood's typewriters. Wives fit & I did find an entry at Ancestry in the newspapers clippings for Charlotte but at the time wasn't sure if she was connected, she was a bridesmaid at someone's wedding but noted as "niece of". I'll see if I can find a death entry somewhere for Clara that tells me she is the daughter of the parent's I listed, my instinct is that given she is with Alfred in the census that she is whom I think, as a last resort I shall send for her death cert. I'd love the Bangor connections for the newspaper clippings & the mention of the first wife as being Kittredge fits with the older children's entry in the 1870 census, the family above their names is Kittredge. Louisa must have died just after the birth of daughter Louisa. I'm guessing given her middle name was Holman, that this was her mother's maiden name.
I'll have a look at the Ancestry Meinecke families again, now that I know this is one family. Although it appears no one has connected to Conder on Ancestry as yet but we have time for that
Thank you so much for all this, looks like I'll be spending the afternoon on this branch.
bye for now Debra
