Hi Derr
In the 1901 Census in Moss Side Lane, Tarleton:
= William Coulton, Head, 76, Farmer = Mariah Coulton, Wife, 48 = Catherine Coulton, 12
All born Tartleton.
If you search for Coultons on FreeBMD, Tarleton is in the Ormskirk district.

Probable marriage:
Ormskirk Q2 1910 vol 8b page 1241
If you get the marriage certificate, that will give you James' father's name and, with a bit of luck, James' age.
The son John's birth is Ormskirk, Q1 1913 8b, 1705

Address: Moss Side William Coulton, Head, Married, age 65, Farmer, born Tarleton, Lancs Maria Coulton, Wife, Married, age 37, born Tarleton, Lancs Cathrine [sic] Coulton, Daur., age 2, born Tarleton, Lancs
The writing is very clear, and there really is that age difference between husband and wife!
