Where do I find out about baptisms in Stoke area
« on: Friday 04 July 08 16:36 BST (UK) »

Can anyone let me know where I can find details of baptisms in the Fenton and Longton area of Staffordshire.

None of the ancestors I have tried to trace via the IGI Index appear to be listed.

Kind regards

Tigsy - I can't tell from your profile if you're anywhere near Staffs. If you are Stoke Archives and/or Stafford Archives would probably be a good place to visit.
http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/default.htm

Assuming this is not practical, looking at Hugh Wallis pages
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/
shows that some of Fenton Wesleyan & some others for Longton are on the IGI. GENUKI has a listing of the records & locations (as it refers to the PRO rather than the National Archives there may now be other sources)
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/Stoke/

Finally the National Archives collection of non-conformist records is now online - I think a basic search is free, but you have to pay for the detail at

Tigsy - as you say Stoke not too near! If you can narrow down time & place you could ask for a look up - doesn't seem to be any regular visitors to Stoke or Stafford in the same way as there are to some other ROs, but you may be lucky.

Thank you, I do have a couple of threads in particular for an Ellen Bentley who I know married William Brown in 1821.  Looking for a baptism for either of them, as it would be nice to known the names of their parents.

I did just check out some of the references you gave me and did managed to find the baptisms of their children which was nice.  Thank you!

Others are Mary Ellen Wood and Hamlet Brunn all around the 1810 period and I think all in the Fenton/Longton area.

Kind regards
