If you go to:
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/

And search for:
 'York'

You will find:
'1881 Census: Residents of York Union Workhouse, Huntington Road Clifton In York, York'

Is that the one?

The site should help you, anyway.

Good luck.

I hust found a reference to a book on Google books:
'Poverty and Prostitution: A Study of Victorian Prostitutes in York' By Frances Finnegan

Hee's a quote:
'In 1864, for example, Jane Saw- don, a seventeen year old diseased prostitute, was admitted to the workhouse from her establishment, by then in North Street '

Have a look here, too:

Many thanks for the info... Shocked

Benjamin RIPLEY married a Jane WATTERSON in 1896. She had 4 children (that I know of) 3 of her sons were to "unknown" fathers..not Ben RIPLEY Shocked
Ben's death certificate is signed by R HOPE, son in law, which means that there's also a unknown daughter out there somewhere Cry

Hi

The Huntington Road Workhouse was built on the then outskirts of York, to replace two old ones at North Street and Bedern, both in the centre of York.  The building is still there and has recently been refurbished as student accommodation.

There may be pictures of it on the College website which is www.yorksj.ac.uk.

Windy

ps Huntington road is not in the Clifton area
