Nicholas Pain baptised East Grinstead?
« on: Saturday 05 July 08 16:19 BST (UK) »

I am looking for the baptism of a Nicholas Pain who married Frances Thorpe in West Hoathly in 1760.  I have found her baptism 1739 but the only Nicholas Pain I can find is 1710 in West Hoathly.

That makes him 40 when he married??

Is anyone able to check parish registers in either West Hoathly or East Grinstead to check a Nicholas about 1740.

Thanks

Hi Kerry

I will check this for you. Of course the 40 year old could be yours - one of mine was 45 when he married, first marriage too and his wife was only 15 Shocked

Hi Jan

I don't dismiss anything except for my abilities at Maths  Roll Eyes  If he married in 1760 and was born in 1710 that makes him 50 not 40!  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I'd be very grateful for a check and if you ever need anything from East Sussex I try to get to the record office a few times a year, trip coming up fairly soon.  Smiley

Thanks for the offer Kerry - will take you up on it when I get back to my Groombridges.

Another of mine married for a second time age 59 and his wife was 20 - so even a 50 year old (didn't notice your mistake) marrying a 21 year old is possible.

Jan Wink

I do seem to have several older men with a liking for young ladies!

Hi Kerry

I have been unable to find another Nicholas Pain in West Hoathly or East Grinstead and couldn't see a West Hoathly  burial prior to 1760 for the one you have. Did spot this burial in West Hoathly - posting in case you don't already have the poor wee mite

17th Oct 1760 Mary Pain d o Nicholas and Francis (sic) infant

Hi Janan

Thank you for looking and thank you for poor little Mary.

Maybe I shall have to widen my search a bit or it could just be the 1710 one.  I did find a burial the other day on findmypast for a Nicholas Payne in East Grinstead in 1788 - could be him and he would only be in his 70s.

Of course one option I've not explored is that Frances was second wife!

It doesn't always indicate widower on the SMI so it might be worth checking that out!

Hi Kerry

I did glance at he marriage but it didn't indicate status of either party. I did mean to look for an earlier marriage for Nicholas born c1710 but got sidetracked. However I didn't see any baptisms for children of Nicholas prior to 1760 - that said I didn't notice a baptism  for young Mary either, so there could have been some but don't think I would have missed them all. Will check again at some point.

Hi Jan

No I've no baptism for Mary either but I have from Thomas 1761 onward all in East Grinstead.  Just checked marriage index but nothing there.

Had another check in West Hoathly and East Grinstead for Nicholas marriages and baps.  The only extra entry I found was

Nicholas Payn buried Nov 9th 1711 in West Hoathly

This could be the one born 1710 but it does not say infant which other entries do so could be a Nicholas senior.
