Hi Graham, just give me a minute to re-check William's age....
not sure if you know that in 1841 census adult ages were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 years, but these seem quite the other way round!

No, I didn't read them wrongly, they're quite clear, William has taken 11 years off his age for the 1851 census unless they got it wrong in 1841 - he's maybe 51 then really.
It would be interesting to see what his age was on his death cert:
possible death registration Dec Quarter 1859 Southwell 7b 192
Howe William
To go further back, you need to find William's marriage in parish registers although that may not tell you much more as parents weren't often given, roughly 1820 unless there were children born earlier than Robert - so baptism records come next, if you can figure out what his actual year of birth was! The children's baptisms would hopefully give you Elizabeth's maiden name.
There's a marriage on the IGI familysearch website: William Howe to Elizabeth Glen 26 Nov 1810 Lowdham, Nottingham but not sure if it's the right one - and children's baptisms are there with parents Wm & Eliz Howe. Try this page of the site http://www.rootschat.com/links/03au/ - click on Nottingham, then scroll down to Upton by Southwell, click on the batch number for baptisms and on the page that comes up enter Howe. All children surnamed Howe will appear, magic. Click on each name for full details, sadly all just have parents named William Howe & Elizabeth, no maiden name, so you need the full parish register entry which may give that, but at least you'll have the baptism dates.
Joseph's birth just misses the 1837 date for civil registration unfortunately.
So hopefully someone with access to parish registers for Upton will come to your aid, or you could contact Nottingham records office.
A new post on this board asking for parish lookups would be the best thing once you've got all the details from the IGI
