Is there any chance your great-grandfather then had a family in America and there are relatives there to contact as well?

Hi Kathleen
No, I think I've exhausted that possibility. Although my gr grandfather was most certainly a rogue, I do believe the family painted him blacker than he really was
Although he did run away to America (he left my gr grandmother 5 years earlier and moved to London with my grandfather) I believe he intended for his family to join him eventually. My gr grandmother was understandably very bitter but I believe he remained true to her.
I was very fortunate in finding a wonderful lady in Texas who has helped me over the years to piece together his life there. She managed to find several newspaper reports after he died which said that they were trying to contact his family in England to advise them of his death. There was no mention of any family in America and the newspaper report mentioned a wife in England.
Strangely, I have not been able to find him on any US census, but I'm sure this wouldn't reveal any family there.

Good luck Anne-Marie.
Last year I discovered that my maternal grandfather hadn't (as I'd always assumed to be the case) died in WW2, and didn't die until 1998. His death certificate gave the name of second wife whom I'd never heard of. (Oh, I have discovered he divorced his first wife, my grandmother, so we're not talking bigamy.)
Found her on 192.com. I wrote to her. No response, unfortunately. I presume because her husband wanted nothing to do with his ex-wife's family, and she's continuing to respect his wishes. Or because she's in her mid to late 80s and is a bit gaga.
I hope you have more success than I did, Anne-Marie.
I keep meaning to send her a copy of her husband's tree (which I've traced back to the 16th century), just so she has it, and so it can be passed on to any of her children, if she had any.

Hi Aulus
Thanks for your message.
What a shame it didn't work out for you although I suppose I can understand your grandfather's 2nd wife's reluctance to have contact with the family of his first wife. I'm sure she would appreciate a copy of the tree though.
I am keeping everything crossed at the moment in the hope that this lady is still living at the same address and even still alive. It would be such a shame if she was still there but just wasn't interested
I will keep in touch
Anne-Marie
