Burt Family
« on: Saturday 05 July 08 21:13 BST (UK) »

For some time now I have been researching my Burt family roots but I have one source of frustration. Great grandafther James Burt and his wife Helen migrated to New Zealand via Liverpool in 1906. With him came his family - 6 of the 7 migrated. It is the 7th that is the source of frustration.
I know of Helen Milne Hume Burt the eldest,
Mary Murray Burt - my grandmother
Catherine Robertson Burt,
Jemima Burns Burt,
James George Burt,
Henry Milne Burt - he came but I know nothing of him.
But I know nothing and cannot find anything about Andrew Burt who was born on a date between Catherine and Jemima.
The family lived at 14 Hay Terrace, Edinburgh prior to their migration - they were there at the time of the 1901 census.
It is alleged that a descendant of Andrew migrated to New Zealand and lives in Christchurch. I have written to this person but he has either not received my letter or chosen not to respond.
If anyone out there can help me I would be most grateful.

Hello

From www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

1891 BURT HENRY MILNE M ST ANDREW EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/02 0428

The above website is a pay per view site - minimum spend £6 - buys you 30 units.  1 unit (20p),  buys an image like above - a further £1 - will buy you his birth entry - which for Scotland - as you may already know will give his parents names, (including mothers maiden name), occupation/s, ages, date and place of marriage.

Oops just re-read your message.  it was Andrew you were looking for.

Ho hum - better go back on to SP.  Regards,   Steve  :O)

Okay,  Your Andrew Burt was born on March 01 1882 to James Burt a Nailmaker and his wife Helen Burt (Miss Burns).  They were married in Edinburgh on 02 June 1874

_____________________________________________________________

Between 1900 and 1932 (last year to search online) - there are 4 Andrew Burts marrying in Edinburgh.  Assuming that one is 'yours' - if as you say a descendant of Andrews emigrated from Scoitland, you'll have to invest the £6.  With the info you've got it'll allow you to check all 4 (if you're unlucky enough) and leave you enough to download James and Helens marriage entry - as you have the names and dates - which will take you back a generation - assuming you haven't done that.  Good luck

Regards,   Steve

 Hello

Just back off the IGI www.familysearch.org.  Looks as though the marriage to Helen was his second.  Enter James name - year as 1874, 'marriage' and country as Scotland.

There is evidence of an 'extracted' marriage for the date which I gave in the message above also-

There is an ancestral file giving submitter details in Australia - so another avenue for you

 Spouse:  Helen BURNS
 Marriage:  2 Jun 1874
  Edinburgh, Edin. Par., Midlothian, SCT

 Spouse:  Maggie SHORTHOUSE
 Marriage:  14 Jun 1872
4 Heriot Bridge, Edinburgh, MDL, SCT

Regards,  Steve  :O)
Update:  can find no evidence on the IGI of children born to the first marriage.

Steve thank you for that. He would have been my father's uncle and I suspect he may have sent calendars of Scottish scenes and other periodicals to my grandmother.
I will have to spend some money on Scotland's People. I am registered there but have not done much in the way of searching as so many others who I have contacted through Genes Reunited have been reasearching the same basic family - all descended from Andrew Burt and Christian Black.
I suspect that this is a family group taken before the family migrated.
