1901 - Heyes - Please
« on: Sunday 06 July 08 01:21 UTC (UK) »

Hello

I have finally got the name of my great-grandmother, one ELIZABETH HEYES who i know to have married Albert Jackson in Prescot, St. Helens in 1911.

On that marriage certifcate she lists her age as 26, gives no job and her father is Thomas Heyes. His job is difficult to make out but it seems to something to do with Coal Mining.

My grandmother also Elizabeth was married in Stalybridge but not sure when they moved to Stalybridge. I have no other connections to there and its my thinking that one of her parents Albert or Elizabeth had family there, so that would pre-date the marriage. Seen as i've done quite a bit on Albert's side of the family i'm pretty sure they never left St.Helens.

Thankyou

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

Does this look like them?

1901 census
RG13; Piece: 3796; Folio: 17; Page: 25
4 Pickford’s Yard, Staleybridge, Cheshire

Thomas Heyes, Head, widower, age 50, Slater, b Staleybridge
Elizabeth Heyes, daur, age 17, cotton spinner, b Staleybridge
Louise Heyes, daur, age 14, b Staleybridge

This appears to be the only ones in Staleybridge.

Hi Jonathan

Just about to post the same family as Michael found.  There's another family in Aspull, near Wigan, that father Thomas is a coalminer hewer, but daughter is Elizabeth Ellen Bentham, aged 16, so the first looks most likely.

Were the witness names on the marriage cert relatives, perhaps sister Louise, that would help!

In 1891 Thomas was still a Slater, the family also had wife Elizabeth, older daughters Jessie & Mary Ellen & son James, younger son John if that helps

Thankyou both very much  Grin

It does indeed look like the right family. Sadly like i say i only know of Elizabeth and her father Thomas. No the marriage witnesses were Henry Polding (unknown to me) and Nellie Jackson who will be from the other side of the family.

Looked at Thomas' job again and it is 'Day wage (can't make out) in coal mine'
Well that was 1911 and they were living in St.Helens (Elizabeth was anyhow)

So no matches in St. Helens in 1901? not even under Hayes (sorry i know you will have covered all the bases, just want to cover all mine!)

If not then yes indeed this looks like them

Thanks again

Hi Jonathan,

Day something in a coalmine is nothing like a slater, so perhaps not him after all.
Perhaps you'd like to post that part of the image on the photo restoration board so that someone can have a go at deciphering it.

Dateler/Dataller/Day Man/ Daytaleman/Day Labourer  ~    Casual worker, employed on a daily basis
 Slater  ~   Roofer

Think I was sidetracked by Stalybridge, will have another look in St. Helens area, there was an Elizabeth Heyes b. St. Helens but with father John, and an Elizabeth A Heyes with grandmother Margaret, so need to go back one census to see if her father was Thomas

More later,

Possible birth registration
Mar 1885 Prescot  8b   768    Heyes    Elizabeth Ann

but I think this may be for the Elizabeth I mentioned earlier who was with grandmother Margaret in 1901, and in 1891 she is still with grandmother but also father John, a glass smoother, so that should rule her out.

In 1891 there are 3 possibles to choose from, the one above, one with a father Robert, and this one in 1891, bit more complicated as she is a boarder so no parents shown:

1891 census RG12/3023  Folio 23  Page 39
43 Eldon Street, Eccleston, St. Helens
Isaac Littler           head m 43 Coal Miner  Billinge, St. Helens
Elizabeth Littler     wife   m 56                   St. Helens
Ann Halladay     boarder w 78                   Ashton
Elizabeth Heyes      "            9 Scholar       St. Helens
Elizabeth A Heyes   "            6     "                   "
Mary Jane Heyes     "            3                         "

same Elizabeth in 1901 - now named as niece
RG13/3523  Folio 87  Page 39
2 Craven Buildings, St. Helens
Jane Ellison            head  wid 45                      St. Helens
Elizabeth Littler   mother  wid 68 Confectionary Hawker   St. Helens
Elizabeth A Hayes niece    s   16 General Servant Domestic   "
Edmund Holden 48 ]
Daniel Kenny    16  ] - boarders
John Woon    15  ]

in 1901 the older Elizabeth (sister?) who was boarding in 1891 is a domestic servant in Huyton, Mary Jane could be one of several but none with a father Thomas  Huh

I think you may need to go through possible birth registrations and get her birth certificate to decide which Elizabeth she is.  Most register offices will check known details eg father's name & occupation before you buy, or the GRO charge £3 for reference checking

She could be the one I listed above, although you didn't mention a middle name Ann
Here's the Lancs bmd website address, which may help

There were two Henry Poldings living in St. Helens in 1901 but can't see any obvious ties to the Heyes family (checked their parents' marriages)
so must perhaps just have been a friend.  Sometimes witness names can be very helpful

Kind regards, Barbara

Thankyou, as ever it seems one answer opens up a load more questions!

I like the simple idea that it could be the first family mentioned living in 1901 in Stalybridge, but when was anything simple!

That would be too easy!
Have you looked on the Lancs bmd site I gave you earlier?

Possible birth registration
Mar 1885 Prescot  8b   768    Heyes    Elizabeth Ann

Here's the Lancs bmd website address, which may help

That would be my best suggestion, there are several possibles on the website
