Chapman family
« on: Sunday 06 July 08 04:51 BST (UK) »

I am looking for info on the family of my ggrandfather, Frederick George Chapman.

He was born in London in 1894ish (July 5th or 6th) according to his WWI draft registration...however, his obituary says he was born in Liverpool, England so I'm not sure which direction to persue?!?!

He lists his parents at William Chapman and Elizabeth Cooper on his marriage application in PA, USA. although his obituary says his mothers name was Elizabeth Daley Chapman.

There are two known siblings: Sydney (we think he lived in Leeds in 1954 because of a postmark on a card he sent to Fred) and Dorothy E. Stephenson of "Preston Lane, England" (according to Fred's obit in 1960.  I have been informed that the "Lane" might be a typo and should read "Lanc".)   I am assuming that Sydney died between 1954 and 1960 because he is not mentioned in the 1960 obit.

His obit also says that he served in the British Navy before coming to the US but I have not been able to find anything to back this up.  He enlisted in the US army in 1918.

I have been told that both his mother and father were deceased by 1905ish and that he was sent to live on a "large farm" with his grandfather (not sure if paternal or maternal).  He supposedly ran away, stowed away on a ship and came to the USA.  Not sure if this is entirely true or has just made for an interesting story.

I have not been able to find the family on a census...maybe never will if dad died first and mom remarried...have not been able to locate a birth certificate for Fred....in fact, have not been able to find a trace of them at all in England.  I have tried searching variations of the name, mom's maiden name, the Daley name, and any and everything I could think of.

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!  Smiley

A William Chapman married and Elizabeth Jane Cooper Sept Qtr 1898 in St.Pancras London

There is a Sydney Chapman reg Sept qtr 1896 in Marylebone

I do not know how you would prove or disprove any of this?

Hmmmm.
Interesting...there is also a Dorothy Chapman birth reg in Pancras and a Sydney Cadman (maybe a typo?) reg in Pancras.   I also found several Elizabeth Jane Chapman deaths around that area....I will follow up.  Thank you!
