There is a Bertha Ridgway in what appears to be a complicated family structure as follows: 1901 census RG13; Piece: 3286; Folio: 63; Page: 2
Thomas Kitchen, Head, m, age 53, Flour dealer, born Stockport, Lancs Charlotte Kitchen, Wife, m, age 50, born Stockport, Lancs Thomas Kitchen, son, age 18, Flour dealer’s asst, born Stockport, Lancs Annie Kitchen, daur, age 13, born Stockport, Lancs William Kitchen, son, age 12, born Stockport, Lancs
The above family live at 49 Lancashire Hill, Stockport.
At the next house, 51, it appears that the family continues on, although they are marked as a different household, all are stated to be step son/dau etc, presumably of the Kitchen family. Does this make any sense to you?
Herbert Hodson, step son, single, 20, warehouseman (?? Factory), b Stockport, Cheshire Hannah Elizabeth Hodson, step daur, single, 26, Cotton Thread Spinner, b Stockport, Cheshire BERTHA RIDGWAY, step daur, MARRIED, age 21, Cotton Thread Spinner, b Stockport, Cheshire Robert Hodson, step son, age 16, Sign Writer’s apprentice, b Stockport, Cheshire HAROLD RIDGWAY, step grandson, age 11 months, b Stockport, Cheshire
But there is no sign of Thomas, although it states that Bertha is married.
Does this add up?
Michael

Hi Michael
I am helping a lady, her father is Harold Ridgway who you have found, wonder if Thomas was away fighting as there was another son born in 1905, she did say she had problems and now can see why, she seems to think her father and his brother were adopted, Bertha was a Hodson, her father Thomas and mother Mary E according to 1881 census, Bertha & Thomas were married in Heaton Norris which is where Lancashire Hill is.
Thank you very much for your help, much appreciated.
Kind regards
Jackie

Hi Jackie
Sight of the 1900 Marriage Certificate (or Register entry) would be advisable to try and confirm or disprove if these are the correct families.
The 1881 census, which you can see on http://www.familysearch.org/ shows an additional older son called James for Joseph and Mary Ridgway but it also shows that Henry was actually (originally) called Charles Henry Ridgway. The 1891 census also shows him as this. It seems (if we have got the right man) that he chose to drop the first name of Charles. I cannot see a marriage in Cheshire after 1891 for a Charles Henry Ridgway within an appropriate timescale.
Please let us know if you want the 1891 entry to be posted at any time for this Ridgway family.

The link between the 1881 census which you have seen for Bertha and the 1901 entry, which Michael provided above, seems to be this.....
1891
Stockport RG12/2800 Folio 83 Page 52
Henry Walker Head M 50 Cotton Spinner Lancashire Stockport Mary E do Wife M 40 Lancashire Stockport William E Hodson Son S 19 Cotton Piecer Lancashire Stockport Hannah E do Daur S 18 Ring Cotton Spinner Lancashire Stockport Bertha do Daur 12 Lancashire Stockport Herbert do Son 10 Cheshire Stockport Robert do Son 6 Cheshire Stockport
27 ?* Street, Cheadle, Cheshire
*I have tried to read this street name on other adjoining pages and on the district description page but I just cannot make out what it is supposed to say.
Probable Marriage Registration
1888 Stockport AMJ quarter 8a 98
Mary Emma Hodson (formerly Booth) Henry Walker
@ St Matthew, Stockport
I do not think that there is any connection with the Kitchen family in 1901. I think they are a completely separate household. It just seems to me as if the top lines of the Walker / Hodson household have been omitted.
I hope that helps.
