Margaret Jamison
« on: Monday 07 July 08 05:42 BST (UK) »

Hi to all

I am looking for a Margaret Jamison, who came to Australia, before 1857.

Margaret JAMISON was listed as being an aunt to
John MORRISON, b 1839 Redcastle, Ross, Scotland, who arrived in NSW Australia
in 1857 on the "Admiral Lyons"

John was the illegitimate son of William Morrison and Ann Cameron.

I do not not know if M.Jamison was related to the mother or father's side. I do know that Margaret is not the married sister of Ann, as her sister Margaret remained in Scotland.

It is possible that Margaret Jamison had a son Simon, but this isn't certain.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jamjar

A preliminary search on the 1851 only brings up one Margaret Jamieson (alt spellings) in Rossshire. She was aged 34 and married to a David Jamieson. Both were hawkers. She was born Dollar, Stirlingshire. I don't think she is yours  Undecided Nothing on the 1841 in Ross and Cromarty  - but she might not have been married then or was using a maiden name.

Have you traced back to the parents of William Morrison and Ann Cameron on the IGI or SP? From this, you might find that one of them had  a sister, Margaret.

Regards

Hi Gadget,

Ann's mother is a Margaret and Ann has a sister Margaret, so that's out.

I can't find any information on Ann's father Finlay past the fact that his father was Kenneth and mother Christian.

There was only one William in the area and he was married, with a pregger wife. I can't imagine John would come out to anyone from the man's family.

The problem is that there was a wider use of the term 'aunt' in those days - even in my youth, I called my parents' cousins aunty and uncle!  It might be a cousin of his mother's generation  Undecided

If Margaret was  a 'maternal name', it seems likely that it was from that side.

Have you got any idea of her age/dob?

Yes, we also called people Aunt and Uncle, out of respect.

No, I have nothing on her.

Sometime ago I found a person by that name on an immigrant ship. She had a child Simon. I checked state records, but couldn't be 100% sure.

John told the shipping folk he was going to a place that does not exist as the man had written it in the shipping log. If I could pin the place down I'd have a better chance of finding her and the connection. I do know the general direction and will look into it more carefully.

Thanks for your help.

Ummm, have you tried the different spelling of Jamison?

If the child was illegit he may not have been registered.

J

Oooops, the child was Samuel!  Shocked

I always use a range of wild cards - I used Jam*son*, Cam*ron and Mor*son

Samuel - could, of course, be Sorley

These are baptisms not registrations. Scottish registration didn't start until 1855.

Do you not have the date of Margaret's journey written down anywhere?

Another though, given that his mother's sister was a Margaret, could he have not just made up a name to go to to satisfy the authorities - given that you already know that he gave a false address.

Morning to you,

I will need to search for the date of Margaret's arrival. All my records are in Scotland awaiting shippment back to Australia.

John didn't lie about the address, I'd say it exists, it's just that it was spelt and written in a way that isn't recognisable. We have a lot of small country towns with very odd names, some being Aboriginal.

As John became a stockman - moving cattle whilst on horseback - I have an idea of the generl area, but have been unsuccessful finding the name of the place on a map.

There is only one Margaret Jamison married in NSW in the 1860. I have a vague memory of getting her cert, and that she was Irish. Could be wrong about that, though. There is also only one Simon Jamison.

Is Simon  a Scottish name?

Oooops, the child was Samuel!  Shocked

But you said it was Samuel earlier  Undecided

Are you thinking of Ross in Ireland rather than Scotland?

Simon isn't really a Scottish name and Samuel/Sorley is far more common.

Here are the passenger details. I sure got it all messed up.

JAMESON   Margaret   24 or  JAMIESON, M         Stamboul - name of ship -   1854

JAMESON   Samuel       5  or  JAMIESON, S          Stamboul  1854

So we are looking for a Margaret born about 1834 and Samuel 1849

There wasn't a Mr Jameson on the ship.

These are all the Jameson listed arriving in Sydney & Newcastle, as Assisted Immigrants, between '44 and '59

JAMESON Elizabeth    4 and family         David McIver 1853
JAMESON George     38 and family         David McIver 1853
JAMESON Grace       35 and family          David McIver 1853
JAMESON James         8 and family         David McIver 1853
JAMESON Margaret  24 or JAMIESON, M Stamboul 1854
JAMESON Samuel       5 or JAMIESON, S Stamboul 1854
JAMESON William       1 and family         David McIver 1853
JAMESON William     21                          Columbia 1854

They should be on the 1851 but I don't see them together whatever surname. There is a Joshua S in Aberdeenshire with a mother Margaret but she is 44 with husband and quite a number of children.

No baptisms for either of them in the Northern counties that I can see.

That's a pity. I suppose they could have been living elsewhere.

Thanks for looking.  Cheesy
