MI look up please
« on: Monday 07 July 08 16:11 BST (UK) »

Hi,

Could someone see if they could find Alexander Gordon Donaldson b 1802 please.  Huh
He was 'last seen' in 1824 leaving Dunjarg Place, Scotland, - was not mentioned in his father's will of 1844 and no trace of him in censuses.

Many thanks

I have volume 1 & 5 of the MIs and there are quite a few Donaldsons. Only one 'Alexander' mentioned who is in the parish of Balmaclellan:

6:
Alex Donaldson, w Nicholas Fergusson d Dolrig, par parton 6.10.1836 53. Jas Milligan d Knocklea 26.4.1889 68, w Mary Corson d New Galloway 17.2.1907 86, 3s Jas 27.6.1924 62

I have written it down exactly, but I'm not sure if the 1836 death is Alex or Nicholas, but even so, at age 53 I doubt it is your Alexander.

I have found a further mention of Donaldsons / Dunjarg, but in the parish of Tongland:

16:
John DONALDSON late of Wolverhampton d Castle Douglas 6.3.1819 34, sis Eliz DONALDSON d Dunjarg Crossmichael 10.3.1821 27. Jas DONALDSON esq of Valleyfield, w Eliz WILSON DONALDSON 5.8.1844 61.  verse

17:
John DONALDSON died Valleyfield 20.5.1828 75, w Jean WHITEROW d. Valleyfield 17.3.1824 71, s Samuel d Valleyfield 17.6.1821 34

I hope this helps.
Do you have a spouse/parents/siblings names for Alexander?

Thank you for taking the trouble to look for me - it was a bit of a long shot, but I'll give some more details in case anyone can help.

Alexander was born in Ayr in 1802.  He had an illegitimate son called John with Jean Camble (sic) at the age of 17.  His descendents have floor plans of Dunjarg Place, Scotland, described as

'residence of the late Alexander Gordon Donaldson, he left it in the year 1824'

He would only have been 22, and there he disappears Cry

Googling it I have come up with a photo of Dunjarg House, Castle Douglas, which could be it.

It would be wonderful to find out more.

I'm sorry but I can't find anything more in the MIs which I have. I have looked into John and Jean Campbell also.

Have you eliminated the Alexander Donaldson b 1802 West Kilbride, Ayrshire, who has a wife called Jean and is in the 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 censuses and is a Joiner/Wright?

There seems to be a Dunjarg Farm and Dunjarg Cottages which are at Haugh of Urr which is just up the road from Castle Douglas.

But yes there is a Dunjarg House in Castle Douglas which is highly likely at grid NX7663.  I found the picture on google too!! Does the picture resemble the floor plan???

I must admit I discounted the Alexander born in W.Kilbride partly because of his trade!
Alexander's father was a physician/surgeon and owned lots of land in Ayr, but other things also don't
fit.

The house in the photo on the web could fit the plans but it has obviously been extended.
I'm hoping someone in the family will be going up there to see soon.

Meanwhile the search goes on!  Thanks for taking an interest.
