Will not part of Estate File?
« on: Tuesday 08 July 08 10:49 BST (UK) »

Hello Folks,

I have just received the photos of an estate file courtesy of the GSSA. They turned my order around in three weeks. An excellent service.

I had specifically requested that any will be photographed, and indeed the death notice stated that a will had been left. However, no photos were taken.

Would anybody know whether it is usual for the will to be archived somewhere else OR did the photographer forget? (I have already queried this with the GSSA)

Hi Justin

In earlier files, especially in the Cape Archives,  the Liquidation & Distribution accounts and the Will were in a separate file from the Death Notice.  Which Archive is it from?  Have you searched for another file reference?

Regards

Hello Moira,

Thanks for your reply.

This estate file from 1937 (in the Transvaal repository) is the only reference to my great-uncle Roland Levy, and it included the Distribution Account, which was photographed for me.

Although Roland died in Hermanus, he was usually resident in Mashaba (Rhodesia), where he was a mine manager.

The folks at EGGSA have been very quick looking into the matter.

The photographer had noted that I wanted the will and that the death notice recorded the existence of a will. However, it simply was not present in the file so she photographed the Distribution Account instead.

This really is an excellent service, I cannot recommend it highly enough.
