Looking for details of Rev. Robert GILLESPIE (Sept.1844 Annahilt, Co.Down-8 June 1900 Borsad, Gujarat, India), his 1st wife and family.
Rev. Robert GILLESPIE married 1868 Kate/Katherine? WATTERS. Most likely Newtownards Presbyterian Church. Can anyone see date and place of the marriage? (her father Rev. Thomas Watters).
Suspect some of the children might have been born in Ireland (May 1887 Mrs. Gillespie in poor health after death of her then youngest child was in Ireland and she seems to have died by Dec.1895). Known children: 1. Rev. Samuel Gillespie, eldest son, born 6 Dec.1869 Rajkote, India, married a Miss? Bayley from Dublin. 2. Winnie Gillespie, eldest daughter, married between Oct.1891 and possibly Dec.1895. 3. daughter born 22 Apr.1872 Rajkote, India- this is probably Winnie. 4. Edith Gillespie. Just found birth in IGI for Edith Maud born 24 June 1880 Holywood, Co. Down5. Maud Gillespie. 6. Gracie/Grace? Gillespie. 7. child died c1887 India. 8. Donald Stanley Gillespie born 21 June 1890 Ahmedabad, India, was probably the youngest child or youngest surviving child. ?9. Chauncey Marshall Gillespie born 5 May 1879 Belfast according to IGI
The children might all have spent part of their childhoods in Ireland. Around October 1891 Winnie was going out to her parents in India. Samuel entered Queens, Belfast in 1888 and returned to India Nov.1895. Donald was brought back to Ireland by his step-mother in 1900.
Any births, marriages or deaths for these Gillespies would be fantastic.

Thank you so much for the information on the Gillespies- especially Donald S. Gillespie. My grandfather's aunt was Rev. Robert Gillespie's 2nd wife. She was a missionary in Damascus, Syria, they married in Belfast and then she went back to India with him. Married a short while and there was cholera in the district. He died and she was pregnant- went to Bombay to catch a ship home to Ireland with stepson Donald. She lost the baby either in Bombay or on the way home. I have a letter she wrote to her brother telling the family about the cholera epidemic and Robert's death. Rev. Gillespie is buried in a little cemetery (have photograph of his headstone) in Borsad in a place which is called Gillespiepur after him. Donald lived with his stepmother in Ireland until he was old enough to leave (as soon as he could is my impression). My grandfather was named after him but not sure how much contact Aunt Sara had with Gillespie children in until her death. Would not have thought of looking for Donald's marriage in England but perhaps he was there a wee while after War.

Hi,
I know a good deal about Chauncey Marshall (or: Marshal) Gillespie, born 5 May 1879. He attended the School for the Sons of Missionaries in Blackheath, SE London, which moved a few miles in 1912 and is now Called Eltham College. I am the Archivist there.
Chauncey Gillespie was the outstanding sportsman of his generation, captain of the school cricket team and rugby team. His final season was 1895-96. His feats as a bowler in cricket are quite amazing. He later went to Edinburgh University.
Are you interested in any more details? I would be very interested to know more about his family.
Regards, "Eltham"

Welcome to Rootschat. I knew that with such a large family there had to be descendants of Rev. Watters somewhere. Tried asking in Newtownards a few years ago but no luck. Would love to know more about Kate and her family with Robert Gillespie (I'm connected to his 2nd wife and they had no surviving children). I have a few photos of the children and some of Robert's gravestone in Gillespiepur. Also, lots of information on the family if you are interested. Once you make 3 posts we'll be able to use personal message system to exchange email addresses, etc.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I don't think I will be of any help as far as Gillespies are concerned. I am presently in possession of the Watters family tree, brief as it is. but this obviously isn't what you are after. We too went to Newtownards in 1998, and visited the church in Regent St that Thomas Watters was the minister of. Kate, his daughter would have been married there. I haven't yet checked all our info to but feel sure i have read that somewhere. My husbands second cousin, who has put the Watters tree together I am sure will be able to put some light on this for you.
we also visited the British Museum in 2000 and had the Thomas Watters( Kates brothers) collection brought out for us to view. This is a ceramic collection that he brought back from China and Korea. You will see the info on www.takaoclub/personalities/Watters/index.htm

It would be great to get any information you have. The man that put the family tree together is now quite elderly and possibly not up to doing much more. We hope to continue with the research. The website i mentioned last night is http://www.takaoclub.com/personalities/Watters/index.htm
