I am trying to trace the movements to and within the US - probably to California - of Herbert Thomas Jones and his family. Herbert was born in Pontypool, Monmouthshire, Wales in 1852/3, his wife, Emma Elizabeth 1853 also from Pontypool. I understand they left for America round about 1910 or so, possibly from Liverpool, with some of their children: Sarah Ann, born Pontypool 1874, Albert Stephen, born Stockton, Durham, England 1884, Ernest Archibald, born Eaglescliffe, Durham 1888 and Violet Audrey, born Eaglescliffe, Durham, 1893. In 1901 Census in England he was a builder and proprietor of a hotel in Durham. Is there a kind rootschatter who could help me in my quest to find this family please? grossan

Have you looked for the family on www.findmypast.com? The index is free to search and gives port of entry in U.S. which should help. Know that Jones is a difficult name to search but you have names and ages of children so you should be able to find the family leaving the U.K. which will gve you some clues as to tracking them arriving in U.S.

aghadowey - yes, I have tried that site too but was unable to find anything to go on. Is it possible to pick them up on a US census do you think? I wish I had more to go on but have only the 1901 UK census and word of mouth that they went to the US and settled in California without one son who stayed in the UK to marry. Thanks for your interest grossan

Lots of California records on Ancestry including death records which normally give mother's maiden name. Don't have a subscription but maybe someone who does will be able to find them for you.

I was all set to give up as I wasn't finding them in US, but I think I might have just found Herbert on a passenger list into Philadelphia. It is aboard the Merion in June 1910. He is 58, listed as Herbert T. Jones. I can't read his occupation, but it starts with Ba... It looks like he is traveling with an Edward Jones, 38. Their last address is England and their going to Braddock, Pennsylvania it looks like. I think they are going to an Archie Jones. Says Herbert was born in Ponty Pool Wales.

If Kath found the right family, it looks like Herbert was in New York in 1907. Their last permanent residence looks something like Redcar, England.
I'm not seeing any of them in the census in Braddock.

Good translation Shelly. I had the hardest time reading that passenger list. I too checked Braddock. I often wonder if people made up who they were going to see.

Thanks to you all - I am indebted to you for all your help so far in my search for Herbert Thomas Jones and his family. Kath Mc - did the Merion leave from Liverpool? Could the Ba in the occupation possibly be a Bu as he was a builder when in the UK. Shellyesq - Redcar could well be a promising clue as Herbert's son who stayed behind in the UK was living in Redcar when he married in 1911 (place of residence on marriage certificate) Birth dates I have are for Herbert Thomas 1853 (registered in Pontypool Jan/Feb/Mar quarter) Violet Audrey Jones (daughter) 1892 registered Stockton O/N/D who I am sure went to America . I will do some more research to find the connection with Edward Jones and Archie Jones, neither of whom do I know anything about but as Herbert gave one of his sons the middle name Archibald perhaps he, himself had a brother of that name. My grateful thanks to you all for your kindness and help grossan

Hello Grossan and others: Just thought I'd throw in what I know about Braddock, Pennsylvania in case it helps in the search. Braddock is about ten miles south of Pittsburgh. It was and is a steel-making town. Nothing but steel. Andrew Carnegie built his first steel works there in 1873, as well as the first of his libraries.
Regards, John
