Time of Birth
« on: Tuesday 08 July 08 23:18 BST (UK) »

I've been going over some old hand written cards on my ancestors, researched well before the advent of the internet, and I've noticed that the time of birth (at least I'm assuming that's what it is) has been written down on nearly all of my 4xG.Grandfathers children. There are about 10 of them all born between 1810 and 1830, I've not come across this before and was wondering the significance? The original research was done by someone I don't know and has since passed away, so I'm not sure where he got his information from. The only thing that I can think of is that they were Baptists and this was something they did, but other than that I'm clueless! (As usual  Wink)

Has anyone got any ideas?

The time is always written on a Scottish birth cert, but usually only on an English or Welsh one in the case of twins.

Mark

I wonder if the information was originally recorded in a family bible?

I have seen one of these with dates and times and sometimes a comment in my husband's family.

Yes, I've seen similar information from a family Bible - times of both birth and death recorded, as well as causes of death.  (None of mine were Baptists, for what that's worth!).

For what it is worth I have just checked some transcriptions of non-conformist records for that period, taken from the entries at Dr William's Library and while they were not all Baptists, they all contained a date of birth but no time of birth.

I have done some research on a Quaker family and there was a list of names from about the same time which had details of times of births (and elsewhere, deaths) so I wonder if it may have been a Society of Friends tradition to record the time.

They seemed to like the minutiae of family events, for example on a Quaker marriage certificate I studied it showed every single person who had attended the wedding, so a time would seem to have quite normal to record.

This family have Quaker birth certificates going back to 1777 without times on them but maybe the later ones were more accurate.

Thanks for all the info. The family Bible seems a possibility, unfortunately I would have no idea where that might be and even if it still exists! Given the number of children they had it could be anywhere!  Smiley

Mark.

PS Having read all the cards properly it seems most of the information came from my 2xG. Aunt who died in 1950 at the age of 90. Some of the information on them really brings home the reason for doing genealogy!  Grin

I have copies from six of my American forebears family bibles dating from 1767.  The exact time, day and date of birth is given in each bible.

However, when I obtained a post civil registration birth certificate for one of my grt, grandfathers born in West Derby in 1844, it also had the time, day and date of birth recorded

My eldest dau. is most annoyed that we don't have her time of birth, born 16 Mar 80 (in England) now was it 5:30 or 6:30?Huh The clocks went back during labour and we lost track. So when she wanted to to have her stars read, or whatever it is, needing place and exact time of birth she was out of luck.

The only thing I remember was that her birth was mothers' day so I ended up buying 3 bouquets later that morning. 1 for my mother, 1 for my wife for the birth and 1 from our daughter for my wife for mothers' day  Cheesy Oh happy days.

I have a the times of birth for a number of relatives (my family were and are Baptists but I don't think it has any relevance Smiley ) and the information all came from personal records, ie bibles and private note books.
