sorry ruth,

I have a marriage between John Paterson Lyle and Elizabeth Inculden Nurse on 18 August 1898 in Dundee, Natal.  Elizabeth was born 11 May 1879 in Pietermaritzburg and John was born overseas.  With Lyle being a scottish surname, and after looking in England for him, we found a possibly John Lyle born on 17 May 1873, Erskine to parents James Lyle and Janet Patterson, which we thought was a very good possibility of being the right one.  However, Monica on the Scottish board, followed him and found that John was on the 1901 census, when he was supposedly already in South Africa.
I have seen on Ancestry24 that there was a James Lyle who emigrated to SA and was in the Who's Who as coming to Orange River in 1897, and was born 22 Feb 1871 Rothsay, Scotland.  Whether this man is a brother to John Patterson, I am not sure.

John Paterson and Elizabeth Inculden had the following children:

Elizabeth Margaret B8-1-1900
Muriel Adelaide Patterson B9-4-1901
Marjorie Janet B9-1-1905
Lillian Maud B15-11-1907
Arthur John B6-7-1909

Hope this helps:)
