Census information Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

I am looking for the birth date and place of birth for John Powell Grant Webb (some records show Trans instead of Grant). The information I have is that he married Jane Joliffe Ackerman at Bridport on 21/4/1854 and he died at Upper Hutt New Zealand in 1894. I haven't been able to trace the date of their arrival in N.Z. I also have no other information on his wife Jane Jolliffe
Thank you Bellbird

There is a 17 year old Jane Ackerman in 1851 living in Bridport Dorset with parents William (a flax worker) and Elizabeth.
Also younger brother 12 year old Henry.
More info if you think it's them.Hopefully if you have the marriage cert you will know who her dad was?
Don't know if you have access to the censuses, but here's the ref incase you do. HO107/1861 Folio 273 Page 15

Mum,dad and Henry are still in Bridport though.

Thanks to Carol and Lydart for your efforts in trying to locate John Powell Grant Webb who married Jane Jolliffe Ackerman 21/4/1854. Reference given with this information is ref. 5a/707. Don't know if this is any help. I have tracked him in NZ Electoral Rolls (apparently census info is destroyed after statistics done in NZ) by name of John Powell T G Webb which covers both John P Trans and John P Grant Webb in the NzElectorall Roll for 1887 at Upper Hutt (Labourer), again in 1891 and 1893 also in 1893 his wife Jane appears it being the first year women were able to vote. Apparently the first in world to do so. The info records him as a blacksmith but this is not what's in the electoral roll for 1887. SAid that they had two children, Mary and Elizabeth, the latter is my grandmother and she married in NZ Samuel Cranch whose family I managed to track back to a marriage in 1768. A Devon family. Hope this helps, Marriage Certificates from England cost 25 pound which is $75 Nz so don't really want to go there unnecessarily. Would the Registrars Office in Bridport be able to help me without that sort of expense Thanks in anticipation Bellbird

Hi Bellbird,
THis is the marriage...
Marriages Jun 1855 ACKERMAN Jane Joliffe and WEBB John Powell Grant in Bridport ref 5a 707
Order the cert from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ at a cost of just £7 (don't know what that is NZ $) they post abroad for that price too
Good luck

Hi bellbird
At £25 - someone has been making alot of money supplying UK certificates to NZ. You also seem to be somewhat behind in the exchange rate. 6 years ago it may have been 3:1 to the NZ$, but no more.
The £7 mentioned by Carol for an english certificate is $NZ14.60 $NS18.31 at the moment. I don't know what NZ certificates cost, but that is cheaper than any Australian Certificate and recently the delivery time from England has been less than 2 weeks. A good service
Certificates from the Registrars Office will cost the same or more - many of these offices don't have the ability to purchase online so they are more difficult to use outside of the UK.
If you lookup your couple on FreeBDM you will see the marriage date and reference http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
I double checked on the ancestry images - definitely 1855
Here is the link to the Dorset oprs - a very good site for research in Dorset. You will probably have more luck in finding John if you have his father's name from the marriage certificate.

Trish
Edit: I got a different answer to Lydart for the currency? Weird? Oh dear, I managed to use Euros instead of pounds. The $NZ18.00 is no doubt correct, still a reasonable price

I really would recommend getting the marriage cert- it's the only way you will be 100% certain of who their dad's are.
That way we can then be sure that we are chasing the right family back through the censuses

Hi Carol re your reply Wednesday 8/7/08 to my original request the penny somewhat belatedly has just dropped. Jane Jolliffe Ackerman who married JPG Webb according to what you found had a brother Henry and lots of Henrys are called Harry. Most likely the same family. Have found some photos with Mum's writing on the back Harry Ackerman Grandmas brother. Other group photo with big cake in front Mr Ackerman and family Grandma Webbs brother. Not sure whose Grandma, mine or hers, dresswise I would say hers. The photos were taken at Carterton NZ and most of her brothers and sisters were born at Carterton so probably saw alot of them. Maybe the group photo was an anniversary. Still can't track the arrival in NZ of John and Jane or see them on electoral rolls prior to 1887, 1891 and 1893 for them both being first year women had the vote. There are earlier entries for a John Webb who has leasehold house and land in same area but he disappears prior to JPTG Webb appearing. I appreciate your efforts on my behalf. Bellbird.
