I used to be able to search BMD indexes on Ancestry even when my subscription was up but this is no longer the case. Is there any other online BMD records apart from the 'free' years which seem to get up to 1920's now? I do not live in England and have used online/post to get certificates but always had the correct details ie year/quarter/volume and page number. Will they supply certs with just dates/location? I have information from cemetery records.
Keeping an eye out for 'free trial' offers from Ancestry without having to supply credit card details. There were a couple of good deals last year. Hope someone posts here! Meanwhile saving up a few 'look up's. Yes I know some of main libraries have Ancestry online but it always better on your own computer with papers about you

Anne - some areas have their own online systems for BMD - not all are complete. This link http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/ is an "umbrella site" - if you select "local" there's a list of the local BMD sites, those with the same software can be searched together via a link on there. If you pick the "county" link it also gives links to other local sites for that area.

You should also be aware the FREEBMD which provides the free data to Ancestry is usually some way ahead of it with the latest transcriptions.

Hi Anne, you don't need the volume page no and quarter. If you have enough details yes you can still order them online. It costs more without the Index information though . It costs 10 pounds instead of the 7 pounds . The online ordering service has two options -when you go to order - tick the no button that says " Is the General Register Office Index known?" you can read through what is required if you do not have the index info.
Is it some deaths you want order ? as you say you have details from the cemetery This is the information you need for ordering a death cert without the index information
Year death was registered Surname of deceased * Forenames of deceased * Date of death (dd/mm/yyyy) * Age at death in years (for infants less than 1 year please state 0) Place of death or last known address *
If you do not have enough details to order the cert, you can't order online - but you can still order by post ( cost you 11.50 ) :
" If you do not have the exact date of the event or are unable to complete the mandatory fields, then you will not be able to apply online. See Ways to Apply for details of how to make an application via telephone, post or fax." quote from the GRO site https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/faqs-order-online.asp#bmd8
You could post a look up request , I'm sure some of us who have access to the indexes wouldn't mind looking up the particular ones that you want to order off the GRO , if you have the year the event occurred.
Kind Regards

Thank you for all that information Cell and your kind offer. I should have looked at the GRO site myself in more detail. Meanwhile I am missing my access to Ancestry but at the same time glad of a break as it is very seductive and now find I am nearly as interested in helping out others with their research. So not having easy access to Ancestry puts a brake on things! It still amazes me that after about four years work, I still manage to tease some more details out of my tree.
Yes cemetery records are a valuable short cut for more recent years especially as some have them 'online' and you manage to find an obliging person. Meanwhile I was very surprised to see the number of graveyards in a relatively small geographical area in London and the nearest to the home address was not the correct one. They even had the record for a possible relative whose ashes were scattered in 1961.
