In the 1891 Census, an ancestor is shown as being a prisoner in Strangeways gaol. Is there any way in which I can find out why he was there?

Hi Orinoco,
It seems that those admitted were sentenced at Manchester Crown Court - perhaps the Manchester Archives have records.
If you can manage to narrow down the time-scale, by checking census, marriage dates, etc you might be able to find a newspaper report on the event and trial.
Good luck.

P.S. I've just found this site:

Hi Orinoco

Have you tried the free site, The Gale, They do have one Manchester newspaper on there, and I've had details off it.

If the crime wasn't newswirthy enough, haave you tried the quarte sessions and petty sessions on A2A?

Just put the name in and search or you can limit it to date and area of the country.

Both links below if I can find them, - sorry, a new mail is easier, so I'll do that.  A2A has a new page but this is the search I can work best, or you can go in through the National Archives site.

best wishes

Hi again.

For A2A on this link, click the small red search button on the top right.  (I can't tell anyone about the new site as I haven't tried it yet myself, but it's there to try.)

http://www.a2a.org.uk/

For the Gale try here, then opt for one of the newspaper links and do a search.

I didn't limit the paper as although I had a Manchester and a Derby link and I was very lucky with those papers, I got extra information I hadn't expected from other papers.  Eg  the London ones covered all sorts and other papers bought into them, apart from links you may not know about.

Thanks for all the advice. I have found some information (Gale) regarding another family member, but when I tried to log on again, I was told that the log on details were incorrect, so I can't access the site again. I'll just have to plod on.
This is where the details of my other family member are
http://www.artus-fh.co.uk/source/1891%2525252520Census.html
His name is Elijah Artus, shown as living with his family and, lower down the page, as being in prison. Oddly his place of birth is shown as Jarrow, when I am sure it was Manchester.

Hi Orinoco

Isn't it infuriating??!!!?

I think you will be able to log an again though.  I've had that a couple of times and gone bacvk and it's been okay.  I think it's just been when they've been wiorking on it - a couple of times late at night too.  You can reregister anyway.

I'll have a look at your other reference too - as regards census though, the data isn't perfect - even on the originals, we don't know how it got there - ask the neighbours?  Remember it when the enumerator got home?  They had an Irish accent?   -

There atre a couple of occasions when my friend's traveller family were just all put down as being born where they stood

Best wishes
