Hi Pam,

You are correct in assuming the Mary PERCY that I am talking about married John William RAY.

Their marriage certificate details are:

1904. Marriage solemized at the  Prebyterian Church, Bedlington in the district of Morpeth in the county of Northumberland.
No. 53.  When Married: Twenty fourth December 1904.

John William Ray, 23, Bachelor, Blacksmith Striker, 123 North Row Bedlington Colliery. Father: James Ray, General labourer

Mary Percy, 24, Spinster, no occupation, 123 North Row Bedlington Colliery. Father: James Percy (deceased), Coal Miner.

Married in the Presbyterian Church by certificate by me, J Crawford,  Presbyterian minister An Robert Dickson, registrar. In the presence of Edward Overend Jackson and Sarah Percy.

No idea who Edward Overend is, Sarah Percy is Mary's older sister. And both were obviously living together before marriage.

To answer your question about the 1881 census - I do have Mary, 10 months old (haven't written down the place) with her parents and siblings. But I haven't got John William Ray because hw wasn't born yet - that we can find.

I have them both in 1891 census - her 10 and him 9.

To clarify your confusion about the 1871 census:
Mary PERCY, Head, at Burton village with Margaret, Ellen and Williamson are the children of Robert PERCY and Sarah PATTERSON- both are deceased in 1871. The Fail family is her younger sister Sarah and her new husband and daughter. These are aunts to the Mary PERCY we are looking for. In 1861 - this Mary as head isn't with her family, she is out working...not sure where yet. Their Dad Robert is still alive but widowed. Brother James (Mary's dad) is missing and I haven't found him yet - I think he was working too.

Neither of those two births that you found for Mary PERCY in 1881 are correct her parents are James PERCY and Sarah Huh, which is
the name I am looking for to locate a marriage certificate. I think they married before 1865 - first daughters birthdate - and have found one in 1863 and one in 1867. The transcription as I said before is the one that is unreadable so I had to do some sleuth work to find a possible wife with name SARAH - have narrowed it down to two - Sarah HUGHES and Sarah SAGE.

Wait till I share the other side of the story.... Mary's husband John William RAY...then you'll need a darkened room!

Thanks again Pam - it's hard when you can't flick to family grouos and census transcriptions to clear things up.

Fiona,

Just back to Newcastle after 3 days in busy London ( two days in National Archives, Kew - found nought)

Humour me and tell me what is the connection between Mary Percy, dtr of James/Sarah Percy................

( 10 months old on C1881 ref 5093-106-5, born Plessey Checks
10 yrs on 1891 ref 4235-60-47, b. Horton)

Plessey Checks versus Horton !... is OK, Plessey Checks lat within the "township" of West Hartford, which itself lay within the Parish of Horton... so two census enumerators exercising their options to enter "place of birth" or "parish of birth".........

and... the Percy/Fail household in Burton on C1871 ref 5178-71-8...?

Hi Michael,

I sure can explain the connection...

The Mary PERCY, daughter of James PERCY and Sarah ?  and the PERCY and FAIL household, is that James PERCY (father) is brother to the Percy/Fail occupants.

The confusing thing, is that all of James and Sarah's children are named after his sisters by the looks of it. So therefore Mary PERCY b. 1881 is the niece of the other household.

Does that clear it up?
