A Long Way from Home?

Hoping that someone may be able to help with the following.

I'm currently researching all instances of my maternal grandmother's surname of WASTIE.  From the mid 1500s to mid 1700s they are they are almost exclusively concentrated in Oxfordshire (with a few in Berkshire).  From the mid 1700s they start turning up in London/Surrey/Middlesex (probably those in Oxford striking out for pastures new, but as yet unproven!).

However, I was most interested to find the following entry on the IGI for Saint Sampson in York:

31 DEC 1770 - James WASTIE, s. John

The IGI doesn't seem to have any further entries for the WASTIE surname in this parish.

Can anyone throw any light on this "rogue" WASTIE in the north?

Any information - however slight - would be very welcome.
