Could someone please look up 3 Stanger [?] Street, Keswick in the 1901 census to check whether a HODGSON family including a Susan HODGSON (probably aged about 15-16) was living there? I would be grateful for details.
Thanks Geoff

That's the family. Thanks so much. And delighted to see that there was a William of that generation too. Now to find the connection between that family and my great-grandmother Mary Hodgson -- there has to be one, I think, because Susan made an entry in one of the family's autograph books and William is in one of the family's birthday books from around 1903.
Many thanks again Geoff

... and (pushing my luck I know) have you a HODGSON family in 1891 in Keswick with a John HODGSON, builder, aged about 64, wife Mary A. HODGSON, aged about 54, and possible children Isabella (25), John (23), Sarah E. (21), Thomas (18), Joseph (14), Liby [?Lily, but thus in 1881] C. (11)? That is the lineup in 1881, but I don't have the precise address within Keswick. I think this is the family from which my great-grandmother is one of the daughters.
Thanks Geoff

Thanks again: a connection with Isaac's family is certainly suggested by the name Edith, given by Joseph and Mary (!) to one of their daughters and otherwise unknown in the family.

Many many thanks. I will certainly go and do a lookup but realize that before I do that I need to order Mary's birth certificate -- all this has gone rather faster than I expected! Once I'm sure that John and Mary Anne are her parents, I'll chase up the cousins and so forth. But again, the name Sarah Elizabeth (repeated for Mary's daughter, my great-aunt from Keswick), and actually the Christian name Pearson, which suggests that Mary Anne's maiden name was that, all fit in rather well with known naming patterns. This has been a good day! Sorry I can't help with your own query.

Geoff,
Back online...briefly!! expecting the family for tea.
If you post all the details you have (if Any) of your Mary Ann,
I will try to do a search, approx age would be useful, and where she may have been born or married.
I will certainly check for Mary Ann Pearson.
I have found in my research, a definite pattern in names, being passed down in the family.

Many thanks. All I know about Mary Ann HODGSON is what is in the censuses: in 1881 aged 44, says she is born in Keswick. I have just been doing a search on FreeBMD for her marriage with John HODGSON (I presume around 1855 to 1860 -- her children have already started to appear by 1857) without success under either John HODGSON or Mary PEARSON, for what that is worth. I have this afternoon ordered the birth certificate for Mary HODGSON b. 1857. I guess her maiden name was PEARSON only because there are children John Pearson HODGSON and Joseph Pearson HODGSON in that 1891 listing you sent. But I realize that even if she was born PEARSON, she could always have been a widow at this marriage. So there is not too much to go on.
Thanks anyway Geoff

Hate to say this, but I think Mary's age (i.e. the younger Mary, my great-grandmother) rules it out as being them. I have fairly secure info for her: born 12 Jun 1857, married Joseph BIRKETT 1 Jun 1876, first son 28 Jun 1877, first daughter 3 Mar 1879, etc, dies 22 Apr 1886. She couldn't possibly have been 8 in 1871... though her marriage certificate does have John HODGSON, builder, as her father.
But I'll keep a note of that Pearson family, who I think must be yet more cousins, at least.
Thanks Geoff
PS Have the G & T anyway...
