Hello to everyone,
I have just joined up with Ancestry, and already I am stuck, can anyone advise me what to do?
I have the mariage cert of Minnie Susan Lazarus to William S Major August 1885, West Ham, stating Minnie's age as 21 years old. What I am having problems with, is finding her birth cert. I have looked in 1863-1866 with no luck, so what am I doing wrong.
Help, Help,PLEASE
Maisey.

Hello Maiseyday Hava a look on the marr. cert, and identify Minnie's father's name, and occupation. Then look through the census, to ascertain exactly which Minnie fits into the correct family. In the 1871 census,I found:- Minnie born 1863 in St Mary Whitechapel, parents Joseph and Caroline Minnie born 1864 in Mile End, parents John and Elizabeth Minnie born 1864 in West Ham, Parents James T and Susan Hannah ......see which one fits to the parent on the marriage cert. You can then send for the birth cert, stating that you only want it if it shows the correct parents. You'll soon learn the 'skills of a detective', on Ancestry...enjoy it, if I can do it, anyone can!! Regards Technoblond

Thankyou, Iria, Genjen & Technoblond for your help. I dont know how you all work so quick. Yes I have the right Minnie Lazaurs, her parents are Susanna & William of West Ham, going to order the birth cert. now.
Once again thankyou. I feel sure I will need further help later on.

Are you sure her father's William? The 1871 census with 7 yr old "Minnie" in West Ham as a daughter of James T and Susan, found by Technoblond, looks as though it could be her: RG10/1630/141/19

HI AVM228,
My mistake, her father is James T she married William. I knew I would be making a hash of it all. but hopefully, I'll get better with it as I go along.
While I'm hear what does the : 'RESIDENCE' mean on the census form online.

Hi Celia,
Thanks for your reply. I know residence is the address, but its not been on every persons details,so I take it that, where I have seen it, it is that the person has moved from the birth place to another, so it states residence being at that time. You tell I'm knew at all this can't you? LOL

Looking for that elusive branch!

Hi Maisey To follow up on your original question - although I'm sure the other Rootschatters have supplied the correct information, I'd urge caution when looking for birth dates based on the age supplied on the marriage certificate. I had terrible trouble finding my gt grandmother based on her age of 21 on the marriage certificate. I couldn't find her in any of the previous censuses based on that age and the two entries I narrowed it down to put her at a younger age. I eventually managed to get her death certificate which showed what I suspected was her correct age- three years younger than she would have been if her marriage certificate was correct. I deduced that she probably lied about her age when she got married to avoid the need for parental consent. (The fact that her name was Jones didn't help much either!)
