Death Certificate
« on: Friday 11 July 08 04:05 BST (UK) »

Help wanted  i am a little bit puzzled
Have just recently received a death certificate for my husband grandfather x3 death certificate.
Died thirtenth september 1885 Aston union workhouse  John Hitchins age 81
Occupation Baker journeyman of taylor street nechells
The question i have is it normal for them to list possibley where they worked or are we right to assume he was still working at the ripe old age of 81.Would anyone know the name of the bakery on Taylor street Nechells.
Many thanks

That isn't necessarily where the bakery was but where he came from on entering the workhouse - where his household address was.
I doubt he was working in any real capacity as the 1881 census lists him as the inmate of the workhouse, but as there was no pension (except for the army and post office) working people continued to work as best they could to try to sustain a living and avoid the workhouse.
Aston Workhouse records, if they have survived, would give more details about John, including his address, in its admission records.

Skilled people who entered the workhouse were quite often put to work in that capacity in order to save money. It's debatable as to whether he was working at that age.He may well have entered the workhouse because he was unable to work.As Valda said the records may have more information.
Taylor St. lay between Cromwell St. & Bloomsbury St. in a heavily built up area and so there were probably many bakeries in the vicinity.
