Coroners inquest
« on: Friday 11 July 08 10:13 UTC (UK) »

How do I find a transcript of an inquest held at Bury St. Edmund's Suffolk  into a sudden death in 1843?
I have a copy of the death certificate and I would like to find out more of the circumstances of the death.

Hallo and welcome to Rootschat. Grin

What was the name of the person involved.

You could try the free Gale newspaper trial, they have the Ipswich Journal on there which could have a report of the inquest and the circumstances of death.

http://access.gale.com/gdctrial/

When you register, put NONE in the institution fields and use a working email address as they send you the passwords to use.

Have fun as the site is very addictive and its surprising what you can turn up on various rellies.

Hi, Thanks for the link, I had a look it's an interesting site. i have bookmarked it for future reference.
Nothing about Harriot Hone who died by cutting her own throat,  that can't be an easy thing to do.
Jury verdict 'Temporary derangement" I think that's something of an understatement. Oh well back to the hunt

Welcome Jennifer A

You could also quote the reference given in the "Sudden deaths in Suffolk volume" to the Suffolk Record Office and ask for a photocopy of the inquest.  They may just charge you for the photocopying.

What date in 1843 did she die?

I think when the SRO copy anything these days, they charge £5 administration fees.

Harriot Hone died at Great Cornard 2/8/1843 and registered 5/8/1843
I have downloaded the postal research form from Suffolk Record Office
but I don't have a clue about locating the  sudden death records reference I need.

I don't think the Sudden Death volumes cover that part of Suffolk where gt. Cornard is.

I wonder if this is it, from the Ipswich Journal = Saturday August, 12th, 1843.

"
INQUISITIONS = Before Harry Wayman, Gent, Coroner for the liberty of and Borough of Bury St. Edmunds. = On Friday last at Gt. Cornard, on the body of Mrs Howes who committed suicide by cutting her throat with a case knife. She had been in a very low way some time previous to the committal of the rash act. Verdict " Temporary derangement
                                                           "

Having just checked, you are quite right Sue, so providing a reference is not really an option.  I had assumed wrongly, that when Jennifer mentioned "Sudden Death" that she had gleaned the information from the wonderful volumes by Leslie and Doreen SMITH.

I think that you may have to bite the bullet and apply to the SRO giving as much information as you can unless someone is going there and is willing to photocopy it for you.

Hi Jennifer

Its quite possible there might be a fuller account in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press. This newspaper covers stories in the Sudbury area maybe more than the Ipswich Journal did. Unfortunately as far as I know it isn't on line.
