A Proper Bunch of Charlies!
« on: Saturday 11 July 09 11:54 UTC (UK) »

Well I never - couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this little lot on the 1861 census for Ledbury:

Ledbury 1861

Charles CLARK Head
Sarah Wife
Charles Son
Charles SKINNER bro in law
/
(next door)
Charles PALMER Head
Charles n.k. Lodger
/
(next door)
Charles COWARD
others
Charles TAYLOR lodger
/
(next door but one up)
Charles MASON Son of household

So 8 out of the 25 people on the census sheet were called Charles!

 Shocked Shocked

Beat that!!

Never seen anything like that  Cheesy

and yet, apparently, Charles was only the 8th most popular boy's name 1851-1860, and crept up a bit to 5th place 1861-1870

Maybe it was different in Ledbury  Cheesy

I guessed it wasn't the most common, generally - thanks for the info!

The odd thing is that they weren't all born locally, so it is just a coincidence.

I'm going off to check what the enumerator was called!

Edit: nope - he was a Richard  Cool
