Marriage of James Youers
« on: Saturday 12 July 08 12:10 BST (UK) »

Can anyone help, please.

I am looking for the parents and siblings of James Youers. Could be spelt Yours, Yoerrs. I think he was born early 1800 around Tetsworth. I believe his parents were James and Elizabeth, but no proof.

James was married to Ann, who was born in Thame, Oxfordshire. It would be nice to find out her maiden name and family info.

They were living in High Wycombe during the 1841 and 1851 census.

Thanks

Hi,

I had a look at the Tetsworth PRs (Oxon FHS CD). There are no Yours/Youers etc indexed but there are Ewers!!

James Ewers baptised Aug 23 1795 s/o Thos & Sarah  poor.

There are also Ewers baptisms around that time to James & Elizabeth - but the only other baptism for a James Ewers is back in 1772.

There is no marriage for James & Ann in Tetsworth.

Have you any idea when James and Ann married? e.g. how old are their children on the 1841 census?

You said that Ann was born in Thame, so, as marriages usually take place in the bride's parish, I checked out the Thame PRs (same CD) and there is this 1814 marriage, but is it too early?

Nov 10 1814 James Ewers bach otp & Hannah X Taylor spin otp

The names Ann & Hannah are often confused.

That's the only James Ewers/Yours marriage indexed.

Hi Jill

James and Ann's eldest child on the census is 12, but I think they are the parents of Richard, who was born around 1825 in High Wycombe. The name Ewers and Youers were most likely the same family, as it was how it was pronounced not spelt in those days!! So it could be them.

thanks again

Am I right in thinking that these are the baptisms on the IGI at the Crendon Lane Meeting House Independent in High Wycombe?

the IGI has the following baptisms to a James & Ann Ewers:

William 1821; James 1823; Richard 1824; William 1827 (presumably the first William must have died).

I've been using the Nonconformist BMD site a bit recently so thought I'd do a quick (free) search to see if these baptisms were recorded there - and they are.  Grin Plus, there appear to be a couple more : David in 1818 and Sally in 1824.

I don't know if you've used it yet but you may well get some additional info if you download the original pages of the records. Problem is that it's a bit expensive but you may think it worth while.

The site is:

Hi Jill

I wasn't aware of that site. The names don't seem right. In the census the name is Yours and there is Ann, Fanny, George, James and Thomas. Richard isn't mentioned, but on his marriage cert his father's name is James and occupation is cordwainer (shoe maker). This ties in with James Yours, so trying to find out if correct.

Thanks for all your help. I don't suppose James and Ann would have married in High Wycombe, or would they?

Ann
