Hi,
I'm looking for information about the social/economical conditions in Christchurch during the years 1871-1881.
A relative whose occupation was shown as baker in 1871 census, was shown as gardener in 1881.
The family came to Canada in 1882 and he was a baker again.
I'm curious about the local conditions that may have contributed to his change in occupation during the period mentioned.
Regards,
Kathleen

I wouldn't think Baker to Gardener was a common change of occupation. Throughout the 1800s people were moving the farms to the big towns.
Have you checked The Times or London Gazette to see if he went bankrupt? I think a baker would have been more likely to be self-emplyed.

Hi Kathleen
The Red House Museum in Christchurch has a lot of useful information on the social history of the borough , http://www3.hants.gov.uk/redhouse and might be worth contacting. Can't think of anything in particular that happened around that time which would have caused such a change from one occupation to another.

I am assuming it is John GOFF to whom you are referring? It is quite possible that he switched occupations when times were hard, I notice he was an inmate of the workhouse in 1861, so I imagine he had simply obtained work in a bakery by 1871.
It is possible that it was the lack of bakery work that took him to Canada.
His father was waiter in 1851 so they were a family of very modest means.

Co-incidentally, the Red House museum is in the former workhouse.

Bearkat, thanks for your suggestion re The Times or London Gazette. Are they searchable on line?
Pete, I will certainly take a look at the great link you provided.
Thanks, Jebber. How did you know the name?
I have quite a lot of information about his life here in Canada and, yes, he was a self-employed baker.

An item on The Red House Museum site that seems strange:
"The Bygones Gallery" Step into a bygone age and experience the charm and harsh reality of life in the workhouse when children worked from dawn to dusk making watch parts."
CHARM??

If you visit this site http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/ put Christchurch in the search box, it will show you plans of both the original workhouse (Now the red House Museum) which John would have been in, and the one that followed, the remains of which are now part of the hospital.
The museum itself is very interesting, one of the places I always take our overseas visitors.

Thanks, Jebber.
John and his two younger brothers were placed together in the workhouse sometime after their mother's death.
Yes, I have their marriage certificate where his occupation is shown as baker.
As I prefer to have social histories together with vital information, I thought perhaps there had been some particular economic problems or changes that required him to work as a gardener.

There is another possibility.
The census pages we view are a transcription of the schedule fill ed in by the householder, as with any transcription there is always a chance of error. The enumerator may have made a mistake when he entered the information, especially if the handwriting on the schedule was hard to read.

For sure, that is often the problem, and the reason for checking and rechecking information.
John and his family settled in Toronto where he was a baker until he became blinded in an accident.
My mother recalled that he was a kindly, gentle soul.

The London Gazette is searchable free online
http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/AdvancedSearch.aspx?geotype=London
Acces to The Times Archives is available through Ancestry if you have a subscription. Many local libraries have access.

Access to the Times Archive 1785-1985 is in fact currently free for a limited introductory period from the Times website (registration, but no payment or card details, necessary):
