Census lookup 1841. William Lace.

Hi,

Can anyone find a William Lace and wife[don`t know name] and Jane Maxwell that were living in the Liverpool area in 1837.William his wife and Jane Maxwell were trialled along with my gggg aunt in 1837 for theft. My gggg Aunt Mary Lynch was transported to Tasmania in 1838 but don`t know what happened to William his wife or Jane.Just wondering where they were living in the 1841 census of Lancashire.They might have been in prison but I`m not sure. I wanting the address for William Lace as thats who my Mary Lynch along with her mother Elizabeth Lynch were living with at the time of the trial.I know that William might have moved since his trial date but still would like to know were he was residing.

Hi VICTORIA,

Sorry I haven`t given you much to go on regarding the ages of these people as I only have gotton names from a report on my Mary Lynchs`that was in a newspaper article when she was charged for a robbery back in 1837.The report of the robbery was in the Liverpool Mercury In June 1837. William Lace his wife and Jane Maxwell were Mary Lynchs` partners in crime. I`m pretty sure that I have found Jane Maxwell in the 1881 census aged 71 her occupation bieng Formerly Ladies Outfitter. This would probably fit in with Jane as Jane was a friend to Mary Lynch and was probably in the same trade [Dress maker]as  Mary Lynch.

According to information found by another researcher one of the people that these people robbed was named Miss Jones.Miss Jones was in partnership with a Mrs Davies at their Milner and Dressmakers shop in Upper Duke Street Liverpool.
I can see that a William ,Jane and William jnr were living with a Jones family in Bittern Street in the 1841 cenus. Maybe these Jones were related to the family that they stole from. William and his wife were discharged on this criminal offence according to the newspaper report. Maybe they lied there way out of it and the Jones felt sorry for them.William living on independent means? He was probably still theiving or getting other peolpe to thieve for him so thats why he was living on independent means[Pinching other peoples money to live on] We will probably never know.
 I really haven`t got enough information to track down these people have I but thankyou anyway for all your help VICTORIA I greatley appreciate it.

Hi,

Yes I too was of the opion that " living on ind means " was in fact "thieving" This appears to be the William Lace you are looking for.
If so it gives you an idea of when they were born.
William 1811 Jane 1816 Not born in county
William Jnr 1836 born Liverpool.
Jane Maxwell 1810 Manchester

Will see if I can find any " clues"

Thankyou for that.I also think this is the William Lace I mentioned. If you can find other infrormation about them I would be greatful. Also VICTORIA I see where you have Colbecks in your family research. I also have Colbecks. Mine married into my husbands side of the family. Does Henry Charles Colbeck ring a bell. I`m sure he would have came from England. He settled in the Bothwell area of Tasmania. He would be born about circa 1840 or thereabouts.

This Colbeck name is not mentioned in our Colbeck family who came from Whitehaven Cumberland. I will send you a pm with address of a contact I have who has connections with Colbecks` Tasmania. If I find Lace family I will let you know.

I have found records of Lace families living in Ulverston Lancashire ( including William & Jane ) 1871 Census.

Dont know how interested you are in these records.
I think there is a possibility William may have been born there.
