This is a long shot and I do not know how records are accessed but have seen others have some luck here! Is there a searchable database for London burials that some Rootschatters can get into?
I am looking for details of deaths of Gr Gr grandparents.
Alfred Green, born Tunbridge Wells 1834, occupation cabman. Elizabeth Green (nee Sprires) aka Betsey, born Werrington, Lincs 1836
I have tracked them and family through censuses and BM etc. They are in different locations in London all their adult life. In 1881 they are at 104 Chenies Mews, Pancras and in 1891 the parents are not to be found and their six children are at all different locations and youngest one I suspect is in Leavesden School, part of the Pancras workhouse system. I have looked at deaths for the names in the time period but only one obvious one and it is wrong person.( Elizabeth Green 1882 Pancras and right age) A very common name!
I will some day try to tackle the workhouse records for Pancras but it seems a bit daunting a task without some specific dates to go by. The death of the mother/father might be a good lead.
Thanking all in advance for taking trouble to read this.

Could someone tell me if LMA have info on London burials and is it practical to do a search for a 10 year time period for a common name? are there addresses on whatever register to distinguish people? I will have a day in London next week and might make my way to London Archives if other work finishes early. I would like to see the workhouse records but again think time is against me on this visit.

Hi,
The LMA hold burial registers for London churches; you would need to know which church.
Have a look at their website:
www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/family-research
and click on to the London Generations database.

Thanks for that Nanny Jan, narrows things down a bit. The Pancras workhouse and their home address were equidistant from St Pancras Church so will try that first. So the church is the key rather than the burial location which could be outside London area in 1880's?

Hi,
LMA should be able to advise nearest cemetery if not buried in churchyard. You might be able to tell by the dates for the parish registers. The London Generations site should help.
Did they still record a funeral service in the register if a burial then took place in one of the large cemeteries?
