Hello debbie
The other person with an interest in John is on the Genesreunited site. Do you have access or subscription to it? If not I could get a message to him. It would mean you giving me your e-mail address in a personal message so that I could connect you if he agreed.

Pam - I actually do have a subscription to the genesreunited site. When I check John Montague there it does not come up with any possible links for me - which is strange. I think the links are chosen based on name and birth date.
I am happy to give you my email in a PM that you can pass on, unless you can give any suggestions as to why it would not be telling me that there is a link and I can correct it.
Are you aware of whether there might be any age appropriate John Montagues in the 1841 census in Middlesex? - just in case he and his family arrived ten years prior.
Warm regards Debbie

I still can't find this trial of John Montague.........can find Montague's galore but not John in 1851, why I haven't a clue......
Anyway.........how do you know he had the alias of John Henderson?
One would think that as the deed took place in Clapham....he lived in the vicinty and with that in mind
1841 Queens Bench Prison, Southwark, St George the Martyr, Southwark, Surrey GEORGE CONWAY MONTAGUE 60 SQUIRE NO ------- WILLIAM MONTAGUE 30 GENTLEMAN NO ------------------------------------------ are they related?.........do they have a sense of humour? ........every class of person and trade/profession is mentioned in the prison so I assume them to be inmates?..........is John a relative?
Their are also two James Bryant's living in St Geo the Martyr of the age required in 1841 (25 in 1850 at the trial)
I don't have access to the 1851.......but here is Jotham Marler who is the glass merchant they robbed in 1850...I assume its the 1861 address?
1841 BROMMELLS BUILDINGS, CLAPHAM, SURREY JOTHAM MARLER 40 GROCER NO SARAH " 40 NO ----------- 1861 3 OXFORD TERRACE, PARK ROAD, CLAPHAM, SURREY JOSHAM MARLER HEAD 58 CHINA & GLASS MERCHANT BECKENHAM, KENT SARAH " WIFE 62 LONDON, MIDDLESEX -----------

Bryant - not sure why you are having trouble finding it - but here is the link.
http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.jsp?path=sessionsPapers%2F18510407.xml
There are a heap of cases on this page - and for some reason it would not find Montague in the page for me so I did a find on Bryant - and after about ten hits - found the cas
You will read in this case that John Montague had been previously brought before the court - and that case was a little more than a year prior. In that case he used the name of John Henderson. The locations thefts occurred in two locations - one in Clapham and the other in Clerkenwell.
I know of no relationship between the other two Montagues that you found and John - but who knows - it is all up for grabs at the moment.
With luck - something will pop up.
Regards Debbie

Thanks very much Bryant for those leads - I will contact them and see what information they think might be available. I had a quick look at the site and it looks relatively easy - and as you said, not too expensive.
I will let you know how I get on.
Warm regards
Debbie
