Irish in Cornwall
« on: Saturday 12 July 08 23:00 BST (UK) »

Hi
I have found some Irish named people who may be linked with my Irish Roman Catholic  families from London and Surrey. They living in Redruth in the mid 19th century. The names include Power; Crowley; Leary and Driscoll. Can anyone tell me why the Irish would be there in fairly significant numbers at that time please? Was it mining or the china clay industry?
Many thanks

Hi Pat,
Just found this for you - hope it helps:

The peak in Irish migration to Cornwall was in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. An upswing in the mining industry, foremostly in west Cornwall, encouraged settlement of significant numbers of people from Munster. Today, Munster surnames (for example, Power, Sullivan, Hogan) are common in old tin mining centres like Camborne and Redruth, although their bearers are not always aware of their links to Ireland.

Hi Paulene
Very many thanks for that useful information. It does help although I think some of those I am interested in came over around/just before the Famine in the 1840s and 1850s. I expect that they had relatives already here who helped them get over from Ireland.
Thanks again
Pat
