The above are my great grandparents and I would like to trace their family tree. Information I have is that William was a Mariner/Lighterman born in Fifeshire 1841 Scotland, died in Dunedin NZ 4/8/71. His death notice gives him title of Captain. His wife Ann born 1844 also died in Port Chalmers/Dunedin NZ 13/3/1871.
Did they marry in Scotland or NZ. If Scotland it may be easier to find the marriage as this will be after civil registration. Are there any records in NZ that name their parents?
WILLIAM WHYTE Birth: 12 AUG 1841 Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland parents George Whyte and Helen Adie WILLIAM WHITE Birth: 21 DEC 1840 Christening: 14 MAR 1841 Leuchars, Fife, Scotland parents William White and Janet Dandie.
There may be more if you check either side of 1841.
Thanks Trish for your efforts. I would imagine they married in Scotland as they died young in NZ. Ann was 26 and William was 30. I have tracked his grave site down but Ann unforunately is said to be buried in an unmarked grave in Old Port Chalmers Cemetery. She died 13/3/1871. Her death certificate said William was a lighterman, his death certificate (died 4/8/1871) he was a seaman and Funeral Notice and Tombstone say he was a Sea Captain. Don't know whether this helps or not. There seems to be no reference to where Ann came from and William Fifeshire.
