1841 & 1851 census - Bernhard Walsh/Ellen Flynn
« on: Monday 14 July 08 00:41 BST (UK) »

Hello,

Would someone be able to look up this couple for me, please?

They have a daughter Mary, who should have been born in 1834.

On Mary's certificates, one says she was born in Ashton and the other Manchester.

Her father was a gardener, if I read the dreadful writing properly.

Thanking you.

Hi Jamjar,

Looked on all the 1851 Unfilmed, no luck I'm afraid

This may or may not be relevant

From the 1855 directory
Ellen Walsh      Dressmaker       15 Blossom St, Ancoats

There is only one Ellen Walsh listed, is it possible that she was a widow in 1855, as there is no mention of Bernhard.

By a coincidence, there is also a Mary Ann Walsh, living in Ardwick, who is also a dressmaker

Perhaps if sks reads this and has access to 1851 Ancoats, they could look up Blossom St,

Hi Jamjar / Dave

Haven't got the Ancoats CD sadly but in the 1850 Slater's Directory there are two Ellen Walsh's:

  • Same lady as in 1854 - dressmaker & 15 Blossom street
  • Ellen Walsh, widow, Welsh's Court, Angel street

Tried an alternate provider:
HO 107/2225 folio 205 pg 10
Ellen Walsh at 15 Blossom street is unmarried 35 year old from Ireland living with unmarried sister Mary also from Ireland  Undecided

Hmmm

Hi,

The nearest I can get to Bernard is this one:

1851
39 Bengall Street, Manchester
H107/2225 folio 368 page 13
Barnard Welch, H, M, 41, Labourer, Ireland
Ann, Wife, M, 40, Ireland
Mary, Daur, 10, Scholar, Ireland

Just wondered if Ellen had died and Bernard remarried as in 1861 there are children aged 7, 5, and 2 which must be a miracle as Ann was recorded as aged 58 Grin Grin

Regards,
Mo

Thanks all,

I'm going to check if her parents came to Australia with her. It didn't occur to me that they may have.

It's possible she came out with her first husband, though. His surname was Kane.

No occupation is listed for her on the second marriage cert.

Is it possible that there is an Ashton somewhere else in England?

The Manchester was on her death cert and her son was the informannt. He couldn't even remember his father's name! So, it's highly likely he didn't really know where his mother was born.

J.

I've checked records for Mary, in Victoria. There is no record of her first marriage, so it is possible that she married before coming to Australia. Or, that she landed elsewhere and then moved to Melbourne.

Her first married name was Kane/Kane. On her second marriage cert it states that she was widowed since 1862. I cannot find a record of her husband's death.  Huh

Mary had 1 child living and 2 deceased, at time of 2nd marriage.

I've found a Robert Cain married to a Mary Ann with a birth in Liverpool, for a Margaret in 1852.

Could they be on the 51 census?
