1861 - 1871 Census Look-Ups, please
« on: Monday 14 July 08 04:31 BST (UK) »

Hi,

In recent weeks I have learned more about my ancestor, old Peter Ferns, than I had learned over a very long time. That new knowledge is due to the contents of a couple of Census documents.

I learned from the 30th March, 1851 Census (1851 560/00 002/00 026) taken at New Cathcart, Renfrewshire that Peter Ferns (sometimes spelt Farns, Farne and Fearns), was supposed to have been about 40 at the age of the Census. He wasn't, he was about 51, having been born c.1799! His wife, Agnes Jackson was shown as being aged about 39. She wasn't, she was aged about 44. Their son, John Jackson Ferns was shown as being aged about 18, which is just about right. On that Census we also have a few brief details about old Peter's sons and daughters, Ann, Margaret, Charles and James.

What I want to know is whether Peter and his wife, Agnes continued to live in the Renfrewhire area at the time of the Censuses in 1861 and 1871. I do know that Peter's wife, Agnes Ferns, M.S. Jackson , died in October, 1872 at Busby in Renfrewshire and Peter himself, died at Mossland Cottage in Renfrewshire in 1884.

The 1861 Census should show Peter Ferns as being aged about 61, his wife, Agnes being aged about 54, His daughter Margaret, (if still unmarried), as being aged about 19, his son, Charles being aged about 14 and James being aged about 11.

I would greatly appreciate some assistance.

My very best wishes,

Tom.

Hello Karenlee,

I reckon you got a hole in one with that - very many thanks for your kindness in getting back with those details.

If the Row of Cottages at Mearns means Newton Mearns in Renfrewshire, then that would be only a couple of miles away from Busby in Renfrewshire. The ages of the individuals involved are just about spot-on and the order of the names are exactly what I wanted to see.

It's sad to think that Agnes Jackson, the wife of old Peter Ferns only saw one more Census before she died.

Again, I greatly appreciate your kindness.

My very best wishes.
