Dalgety Birth Records - a problem.
« on: Monday 14 July 08 09:35 BST (UK) »

Hi!

Over the years I've grown accustomed to hitting a few snags with birth/christening records, especially if they are before the year 1800. When I do, I resort to a number of options, including asking for help from people at my local Family History Centre. However, even then, the problem persists. Let me give you an example:

I'm currently researching members of the Beveridge family, where some of them were born, lived and died around the area of Dalgety in Fife. At present I'm looking at the marriage of Thomas BEVERIDGE to Janet MUIR. There is a Submitted Marriage Record on Batch No: 7016907  Sheet 49  Source Call No: 0538429 that states that the couple married on the 5th January, 1782 at Dalgety.

However, when I started to examine this couple's children using the International Genealogical Index/British Isles Search, I felt most uncomfortable to find:

Jean BEVERIDGE born 13th October, 1776 at Dalgety in Fife.
Elizabeth BEVERIDGE born 22nd August, 1778 at Dalgety in Fife.
Walter Muir BEVERIDGE born 13th April, 1780 at Inverkeithing in Fife.

Their parents were shown as Thomas BEVERIDGE and Janet MUIR. I tend to believe that there is a mix-up of two couples sharing the same names, although there is the possibility that the children were illegitimate. At this stage I haven't had a look to see what age Janet was when she got married, so I'm certainly not going to labour the point.

I'm pretty sure that other researchers will have come across similar types of problems irrespective of what Search Engines are being used. Anybody willing to stretch out a friendly, helpful hand?

My best wishes, as always,

Tom.

Hi Tom

I have had a look on Scotland's People and there are no obvious marriages for Thomas Beveridge* and Janet Muir in the OPRs for that time period. [* soundex on]

There are a few entries for a marriage of Thomas Beveridge with no name given for the bride.

One of these is in Dalgety in February 1774 which I believe would fit with the ages of the children you found. This was also on the IGI as an extracted entry which prompted me to look it up in the first place. This may be worth having a look at.

The others are 2 in Kinross (1765) and one Auchtermuchty (1767) - although I believe the latter may be banns for a marriage to Janet Smith.

The only other marriage of a Thomas Beveridge between 1760-1790 in Dalgety was to Elizabeth Elder in 1786.

I hope this helps in some small way.

Kirsty

Hi KirstyG,

Very many thanks for your kindness in getting back to me so quickly - that's greatly appreciated.

I would like to think that there were two couples living in the Dalgety area having the same names - nothing unusual about that when I scan my Family Tree! I note your comment about the Elder connection too. There are a few Elder's interspersed through the Tree as well.

What you have done is give me a few leads upon which to work on, and that I will do. Again, it's people like yourself that makes Family History such an enjoyable hobby. Don't forget, if there is any family that I have written about on RootsChat that connects to your own, it should be possible to refer to it and then expand on it.

My very best wishes to you and yours.

Tom.
