Stapleton Workhouse............................
« on: Monday 14 July 08 09:14 UTC (UK) »

Searching for the birth of Elizabeth Coole. Have found her in the 1881/1891/1901 census as a Resident (prefere that term than inmate) at Stapleton Workhouse Bristol. I,ve her death certificate which shows she died in 1904 at the workhouse age 37. So according to the census she was born in Bristol in 1867 and the age she died makes that correct. Cannot find her anywhere in the 1871 census. When born there is a possibility that her surname was Richards.

Any help would be appreciated.

helina,  This doesn't give you any direct info but would give background and be interesting ... why not put the name of the owrkhouse into google and see what comes up- you may well get a pic.
I googled Workshouse In Yks and it was most interesting stuff.

Hi Helina

I assume she was Elizabeth Coole in 1881 - can you give us any reason why you think she may have been Elizabrth Richards at birth?

Helina,

I think I've answered my question in the last post - I've found Eliza Coole, daughter of George Richards in 1871, and also the marriage Eliza Richards & John Coole Jun q 1870.

I've checked the Residents list in 1871 for Stapleton, both Bristol City & Clifton Union as well as the Orphans House. Couldn't find Elizabeth Coole or Richards. I notice there were no orphans of such a young age and no children in the workhouses of that age, without a mother. What happened to such young children then - was there a foundling hospital in Bristol? Or perhaps the family hid her away on Census night!

Hi Steve,

Eliza Richards and John Coole were my grandparents, who married in 1870. John Coole was in the Navy and just wondered if Elizabeth was born before 1870. John was 29 when he married.

Another thing the family always had a idea that they had 8 children but up to now can only find 7.

Hi Helina

Its a puzzle - if the Elizabeth Coole of the 1881 & later workhouse Censuses was the child of Eliza & John, born prior to their marriage, it seems odd she was not accepted as part of the family - but if John was not the father why should she be named Coole? Sad that we can't find any Elizabeth Coole to fit the part

Yes Steve, its very sad that is another reason I would like to find where she came from even if there is no connection.   Elizabeth was a epileptic by the way that maybe the reason.

Its a very sad story altogether isn't it Helina? I checked the later census records & spotted "Epileptic" in 1891 & "imbecile" in 1901 - that sounds barbaric even by Workhouse standards. Did she decline in mental health or was the ennumerator/management of the workhouse not able to distinguish?
I also noted in 1881 that her place of birth was Redcliffe - not that it helps much when you can't find anyone to fit the bill

Hi Steve,

On her death certificate it stated she died of a epileptic fit. If I.m correct registering of births was not enforced until the 1870s.

Hello Helina

This reply refers to Elizabeth Coole (whom you said was a resident of the Stapleton Workhouse, Bristol in 1881)

My possible gx3 Grandfather William Chedzoy was also recorded in the 1881 Census as a resident of the Barton Regis Union Workhouse, Stapleton. However I have a full list of the residents in 1881 and neither W C nor E C are mentioned.. I believe there was only one workhouse in Stapleton, unless somebody can enlighten us

Regards

Hi Helina and fellow chatters! Grin

Something of interest as I am never ceased to be amazed at how small the world is.

My 4x gt grandmother was in Stapleton in 1881. She is down as C.Werthime (Wertheim) and is listed as Lunatic. She wasn't...she was only there because nobody could afford to put her up in the family.

I've learned not to assme that when I find somebody in the workhouse, poverty and hardship may not have as a big a part to play in them being there than perhaps we'd like (or not like! to think).

As for terms such as imbecile and lunatic, people didn't mince their words eh? We are privedged to live in a world without workhouses and diagnosis!

Keep seeking and you shall find. Sad story though it seems, I can't help but be interested by it.

Helina

I have found both Elizabeth Coole (14) and William Chedzoy (96) listed in The Bristol City Workhouse in 1881 (listings only seem to include surnames starting Bs or Cs??).

This workhouse included the address Barton Regis and Stapleton, so have e-mailed Bristol Record Office for some clarification as to whether there were one or two. In the other there were 1048 Residents in 1881!

I think that both the City of Bristol workhouse & the Barton Regis Union workhouse were in the Stapleton area, very close to each other - I think you can find an excellent site which gives details if you Goolge "workhouses"
