I have the following family in the 1871 census but have been unable to find them in any previous census. I should be grateful for any help Thank you Yvonne.

Manchester, Deansgate, Civil Parish St John
22 Lad Lane
Richard Stansfield, Head, Married, age 54, Chimney Sweep
Elizabeth Stansfield, Wife, Married, age 47
Elizabeth Stansfield, Daughter, Single age 24, Ender and Mender Fustian
James Stansfield, Son, Single, age 7, at school
All have been born in Manchester.

Have a look at the 1861 entry indexed as Richd Stanaford 1818 b Hollinwood - same address as 1871

Nothing in 1851 but parts of the Manchester 1851 were water damaged during storage.  Some have been restored and are on CD so you need to post a new message with the 1861 details asking for a lookup in the restored parts

The 1861 reference (household found by CaroleW) is RG9/2942/12/19
