St Joseph's Childrens Home for Girls, Darlington - 1950's
« on: Monday 14 July 08 13:50 UTC (UK) »

Hi all  Grin

I wonder if there are any chatters out there who have past connection to St Joseph's Children's Home for Girls  in Darlington - particularly if they were there during approx 1951 to 1957?

Would love to make a connection with anyone who was in that home during that time! Or anyone who recalls their family having girls from the Home around to their family home for an afternoon etc.

(I do know a reunion is happening in Newcastle next month for 'old girls" from the 1940's and 50's)

Cheers

Hi Ambly

I found my grandmother and her two sisters, all aged 7, 5 and 3, at St Joseph's Home in Darlington in the 1901 Census.  I'd love to find out some information on the school and whether there is anywhere I can access the records on line.  I live in Australia so it's a bit hard to do it any other way.

Thanks

Maybe she can help.

If you 'Google' -   St Joseph's Industrial School for Roman Catholic Girls - it tells you a little bit about the history before it became a Poor Law School after 1926

All the best

Appologies, Moderator.
I thought that as the details were avaiable on Google., it would be OK to forward them.
I appreciate your vigilance and high standards.

The records for St Joseph's are held by Catholic Care, St Cuthberts House, West Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE15 7PY.  Sadly, after waiting ten months and giving them 30 pounds, they couldn't find the registration book for the early days, 1896 - 1913.  You might have better luck with the 40s.  The address is a registered charity and freely available.

Good luck, Disey
