Hi. I live inthe midlands and am unable to come down to Southall to seach the indexes. I wonder if anyone may be able to help me with my quest. I am trying to find ANY information about my Great Grandfathers brother. His name was Oliver Raymond, he was born in Kidderminster in 1901.According to his death certificate (the only record I have found!) he died in St Bernards Hospital in Norwood in 1941 of pulmonary TB. He lived at 125 Church Street N16. He was formerly a tobacconists assistant. His death certificate was registered by R.G.Riches who is recorded as occupier. I am assuming this may have been the shop owner???
Has anyone got any information, photographs, records or general chat about Oliver Raymond. I am unsure why he may have moved to Southall. I do not know that he married or had children.
I would be truely grateful for any input.
Kind regards,

Hi,
I don't think that address is Southall; from memory (my grandparents lived in Shepherds Bush from 1930s) that area would have a W postcode. N16 would have been north London.
St Bernards Hospital was, at one time, a large asylum. The records might be held at the London Metropolitan Archives.

Hi,
It would appear that London Metropolitan Archives hold various records for St Bernards from 1828-1973.
The hospital is still used to treat people with mental health problems.

Thanks for getting back to me.
I know that he died of TB. Would he have been there with mental health problems and contracted TB, or would he have been there for the treatment of his TB? Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi,
I think the hospital has always been for mental health problems; it started out as Hanwell Lunatic Asylum. I remember it as a very big building; I used to pass it on the bus going to Shepherds Bush.
My guess is that he was there with mental health problems and was then found to have TB.
It might be an idea to contact the LMA to see if his records might be available; I think they have a research service but not sure of the cost. If you are able to get to LMA you can probably search for them yourself. On my 2 visits there I have found the staff very helpful.
